You double up on Noah, then Emoni can score
Doubling both is stupid because then you leave 2 guys for sure open
The only thing you can do is one on ones
They both win one on ones
I don't see how we didn't get #1
This team is going to be an offensive powerhouse

Acuff should be in that category as well.

That would be an improvement for a MAC team that finished near the bottom in assists and 3 point shooting. My question this season is how well we rebound the ball.

Mostly due to Murphy hangover :-)

Acuff should be in that category as well.

I agree with Edified: Noah and Emoni will be mutually beneficial for each other- and the team of course.

I also agree with Miggy: this will NOT just be Emoni and Noah ‘s team. Acuff is going to control the ball if the scrimmage was any indication. He has handling skills like Noah/Emoni but he has a much stronger build. Opposing teams will NOT be able to push him around. I think you guys are going to like Tyson.

I further agree with ‘79 and Sam: the frontcourt is still in question. Hope they prove us wrong.

You simply don't go from being the consensus #1 recruit in the nation to a bum in 1 year. There is no way ALL the experts were wrong about Emoni Bates. As others have mentioned, we have 4 outstanding offensive weapons with Emoni being the best player in the conference! You've got an outstanding, experienced coach in Stan Heath. What are people out there missing? This has got to be the year. Let's not overthink this, EMU has to be the favorite to win the MAC.

Bob, the teams of Lee, Mangum, Toney and JT4 as well as JT4, Minnie and Jackson WERE MAC pre-season favorites and how many banners did they hang? They just plain sucked! Lower pre-season expectations don't impede anyone from winning a championship. I like where we are.

I hear you and predictions mean nothing but this team is being seriously underestimated. I agree that it hopefully will serve as motivation to prove the naysayers wrong.

Very good point and posts.

Agree with the posts, but would add the following:

Emoni has an extraordinary high offensive skill-set. But as a young player he needs to improve his decision-making so he doesn't turn the ball over excessively, his on ball defense, and his offensive and defensive rebounding.

One thing he should do offensively is to continue to shoot three's when on, but not settle for shooting at from long range as he will convert them at lower percentage. He's tall enough to shoot them, if necessary, off his dribble without having his shot blocked from closer to the 3-point line.

Even though the EMU roster is very good, the outcome of games are often not like decided by which teams has the better scorers, but rather by which team makes the fewest mistakes. This applies to all sports.

The two biggest mistakes are committing more turnovers and fouls than the opponent does. I consider a turnover or foul no more than once every 15-minutes a player is on the floor as acceptable. No more than once every 20-minutes is very good. Last season, EMU had some players who committed a turnover or foul once every 8-minutes or so.

EMU is a young reconstituted team. As such, players need to work on reducing both turnovers and fouling. There are techniques that the EMU coaches can teach. As fans, we need to keep our eye on these stats when watching a game or reading a box score.

Heath is aware of the turnover problem as he expressed post-exhibition game that he wanted to see EMU it's turnover to assist ratio.

In the game, some players turned the ball over excessively and when blitzed and did not make passes to open players. Some players fouled excessively. Some young EMU players did neither.

Making more steals than opponents do is one way that helps teams win the turnover margin. Making steals can be taught. One technique is anticipating and intercepting passes to your man when he doesn't have the ball.

All teams must make a priority of limiting opponent three-balls and scoring at the rim. To cut down on made three's perimeter defenders need to force shooters further out. One defends the rim by having a player responsible for doing so.

An inside defender must learn to stay between the basket and his man inside and give ground so his man doesn't go around him and release ball at hoop as an uncontested shot.

The other is when his man has the ball and to have the mindset to know when the player he's guarding is taking a bad shot so he doesn't foul him. For me all jump shots away from the rim and when player is shooting off his dribble and realeSes the ball 4 feet from hoop is a bad shot. The reason such is a bad shot is that the offensive players shooting percentage will usually be far less than I'd he goes to the foul-line.

These are some suggestions for fans to look for as we watch EMU bb games.

As for what's missing is experience playing together and players demonstrating they have a high bb IQ.

We need to see if EMU lack of height in the starting front-court can keep opponents from shooting a high percentage on two-point shots. Does look like Legend will be a beast on the boards.

Heath has to have his players defend the three-ball.

Players need to work on their foul shots and not hit the back iron. Can work on their accuracy by not counting their foul shots as made when they make one in practice and ball goes in to one side or another. Must be dead center.

RE: MAC Basketball Preseason Poll
I’ve looked over a few of the rosters specifically Kent, Toledo, Akron, CMU, WMU and Toledo.

On paper - this is where I see the MAC shaking out this year before conference season begins. Then I’ll reevaluate these teams after the OOC schedule for my MAC prediction.

1) Kent - very strong starting 5 with great offensive and defensive players.
2) I see no clear two in the conference but would put Toledo and Akron here only due to experience. I like Toledo’s transfer Cochran but losing Ryan will hurt.

Akron plays tough D and D wins championships but their offense was woeful last season.
3) EMU, BSU, CMU, Ohio and WMU are all ranked in this clump.

I believe EMU may have the top 3 point shooting team in the league but our weakness will be low post scoring and low post defense. If we can strengthen our defense at all positions then I like our chances in this clump of teams.

Ohio - this team will have the Best low post scoring offense and low post defense. If they develop some shooters, they will be tough and when they miss their shots, their bigs will gobble up rebounds and have a very high two point fg percentage.

CMU - I like their coach, I like Boopie Miller and their transfers. They improved down the stretch and beat out EMU due to our untimely Covid19 issues. Keep an eye on CMU.

BSU - tough in the post and some quality guards. Sparks may be the best PF in the conference but their depth is questionable. A team that will improve as the season progresses.

WMU - talented guards but I see them being close to a 0.500 team and no better but they will go as their nice shooting guards go.

More analysts later

Luckyone, as always a terrific and informative post.

Who do you think are the five best MAC bb player? Anyone else want to chime in?

As for EMU, do think Geeter will score well inside. Just hope Billingsley and Randle do well playing the Center position.

The top scoring freshman too.

As for coming in 7th overall.... I understand that folks haven't seen our roster play as a team yet, but 7th??? We gained a former 5 star recruit, two power conference transfers, and are returning the MAC's most talented freshman. Yet, we're a bottom half team? I don't get it.

I had us in the top 6 without Bates and top 4 with Bates. Maybe shakey to start but by conference play I expect to see this team jell.

Agree 79 - I believe shakey at first but the locomotive is running full tilt heading into the conference tournament.

Was told there is a poll that places Noah on the MAC's second team. Regardless, he should nba at least that high.

I certainly agree with NIU being last. I agree CMU may be the surprise team. Having Wilson III back is huge for Ohio U. If WMU can stay healthy with White and Norman Jr. both back they can be competitive. It will be interesting how the new coaches do.
