RE: WKU ***Game Thread***
We were up 17-7 with two turnovers. We scored with basically 9 minutes left in the second qtr. we then went:
3 and out
3 and out
6 plays-punt
3 plays-fumble
3 and out
3 and out
Great 8 play drive with a horrendous play call to end the game.
While the turnovers greatly hindered us, our inability to play any sort of offense in the second half was also a huge issue. This has been an ongoing issue with UAB and the offense Vincent runs. As fans, I’m sure most of us saw how this one was going to end right around halftime. I’m hoping the guys continue to fight hard, and can clean some things up. I still think the talent on this team is ahead of most of our CUSA peers, but we need to play to win games, not to get a lead and then try and not lose.

There were two major, major drops by WR on two of those drives. It wasn’t like they ran 3 plays up the middle. The two drops would have been big plays, at least first downs. One might have even turned into a TD with a good run after catch.
Debo’s fumble came on a run in which he had a first down in WKU territory.
Play calling wasn’t really the problem, other than the really bad call on the pick in the red zone. The problem in that dry stretch was execution of the plays that were there to make.

It just happens too often. It seems like we come out and score quick and play a decent first half offensively. Then in the second half everything just falls apart. With Clark it always seemed to be a lack of aggressiveness and too much reliance on the defense. With Vincent, it seems to be that plus an inability to make halftime adjustments, plus poor execution. It's been an ongoing problem for years.

With Clark most of the time it was dumb penalties that killed momentum and let opponents get back in the game when you had a chance to put them away.

Yeah now instead of getting 4 holding penalties and 3 false starts we just let the edge run free to the quarrerback lol.

So in the 5 non turnover drives, everything was a dropped pass? We all know drives end for a number of reasons. Zeno had no internal clock that game. He was completely unprepared and to me that falls 100% on the coaching staff. If we are going to continue running Deebo, at some point I’d like to see us give him a fullback so he can at least have a lead blocker in case an assignment is missed. His runs seemed like 10 yards or 1 yard, and not much in between. The coach is also responsible for running his offense, and if missed blocks are happening, who is that on? We needed to try and get Zeno some easy completions and maybe build his confidence a little, I just hated the way we played from 17-7 on.

Well the two dropped passes would have potentially knocked it down to 3 drives, wouldn’t it? A fairly reasonable number in game where your backup QB takes over.
The offensive play calling wasn’t perfect, I don’t even know if I would call it average but it wasn’t the main reason for the loss to WKU.

Yep. Time to move on and hope Zeno or Lucero can step up.

This tells me all I need to know. He apparently wasn't watching the same game we saw from the stands in Bowling Green. Zeno was nowhere close to what could be described as composed.
Quote:“Dylan (Hopkins) is our starting quarterback and he’s a really good quarterback,” Vincent said. “Definitely faced some adversity early with him being out. That’s why we rep our backup, Jacob Zeno, at least a series in a game so if he is thrust into this moment, he’s prepared for it. He held his composure, and he led. In the environment and situation that he was thrown into, he handled it extremely well and kept everybody going.”
