UT Tennis 22-23
Rockets competing in the ITA Midwest regionals this week - Women at Michigan, Men at Illinois. Apparently, the Rockets started out strong in the singles qualifiers yesterday, where the women went 5-1 and the men 6-2.

Doubles start today as well as the singles main draws.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
Have been trying to find the results from today's matches and UM's website is not good, but it looks like UT did pretty well today on the women's side:

Cassie Alcala won her singles over a player from OSU
Shalini Tallamaraju also won her singles over a player from NIU
both will continue play tomorrow.
UT's third singles player, Mariona Perez lost a 3-set match to a player from Northwestern.

In doubles, UT went 2-2, getting wins over Michigan State and EMU before losing to Northwestern and Illinois.

Haven't looked for the men's results yet.

And just after I posted that, UT releases a story on the women's performance:
https://utrockets.com/news/2022/10/21/wo...onals.aspx

According to a tweet from UT, this is the 1st time any Rocket has advanced past the 1st round in this event.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
The Ladies run at the ITA event came to an end, as Tallamaraju lost to a Northwestern player, and Alcala lost a 3 set match to a player from UM.

The men Olivero and Galic lost to players from Michigan and Notre Dame respectively.

Sornlaksup had a big day though, winning two matches with ease over players from Northwestern and Illinois. He's now into the round of 16 where he plays the number 3 seed from UM this morning. Just looked at the draw and he is the only non-B10 player in the round of 16.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
Women's tennis has started out the season with some solid play. They are 7-1 with two wins this weekend on the road over UIC and DePaul. Their only loss was 5-2 to Michigan State. Their top 2 players, Alcala and Teske have not lost yet. They play Purdue in a couple weeks, and then have a Florida trip before MAC play starts.

The Men are also doing well, at 5-2 with their only losses to #2 Ohio State and Indiana. Sornlaksup is undefeated so far this year - he won his match against Indiana, but his match against OSU went unfinished.

Men and Women both played Purdue over the weekend, with the women losing 1-6 and the men winning 5-2,

Always good to get a B10 win, but Purdue appears to be very bad on the men's side, as they had already lost to 2 other MAC schools.

Development in MAC tennis as Ball State has placed their women's tennis coach on administrative leave pending an investigation.

https://www.thestarpress.com/story/sport...949663007/

BSU has won the MAC the last 2 years, and last year squeaked by UT 4-3 in the championship match.

Ladies are ranked 74th in the nation this week! Last year, they got their 1st national ranking at #75 (75 teams make the rankings) so this is a new program high.

Men's tennis added to the historic weekend, opening MAC play by beating nationally ranked Ball State 4-3.

UT's #1 player, Pawit Sornlaksup remains undefeated on the season, at a perfect 10-0.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
UT women moved up from 74 to #58 in the national rankings!!!! WOW.

On their spring break trip, they beat Louisiana Tech and (then) #70 FGCU, but lost to USF. Strangely now, UT is ranked one spot ahead of USF, and FGCU moved up to #67. They are computer rankings and I don't know the algorithm, but the win over FGCU most have really helped. The only other ranked team they have played this year is Purdue, in a match they lost 1-6.

Keep it up during MAC play, Rockets.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
Rocket ladies get their 2nd straight 7-0 sweep over a MAC opponent, to start out conference play at 2-0. They play defending MAC champs Ball State Sunday at home, in what will be the toughest conference match of the season. I have not been able to find any further news on BSU's tennis coach who was placed on leave about a month ago pending an internal investigation of some kind.

The men beat Buffalo to go 2-2, after losing two close 4-3 matches in the previous 2. It was reported that UT's #1 player, Pawit Sornlaksup has now won 35 straight collegiate matches over 2 seasons.

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
Big win for the women, as they beat Ball State 5-2 today!

Ball State is the defending MAC champ, beat UT twice last year and has almost all the players back from that team. They were 13-2 coming in and on a 11 match win streak. Rockets are now 3-0 in the MAC and 11-3 overall.

The men also won today, beating Binghamton 6-1. They move to 3-2 in the MAC.

Unfortunately, you can' find the MAC standings, as the MAC website has no info up on the 2023 standings or even the team schedules. Come on MAC.

Ladies dropped a bit in the national rankings after starting MAC play, but are reportedly back up to #63 after beating Ball State.

The Rocket Women beat BG 6-1 today to remain the only unbeaten team in the MAC at 5-0 (although the MAC website still has no standings posted.)

Rocket tennis keeps on rolling.

Women beat Miami in Oxford today, 6-1, to stay the only undefeated team in the MAC at 7-0. Three matches left before the tourney. Also Julia Kuszynski won POW this week, the third different Rocket to do that this season. The team remains #66 in the country this week.

The men also won today, 6-1 over Buffalo to move into a tie for 1st in the MAC with WMU at 7-2. Only one match left in the season. Last week, UT beat WMU, reportedly for the 1st time in coach Werner's 26 seasons at UT - that's a long streak to break. And speaking of streaks, Pawit Sornlaksup won his 40th straight collegiate match today. Wow!

Don't believe the women have ever won a MAC title, been a long time for the men.

If there was year to do it for the women, this would be it. Both Teske and Alcala are great players at the top, and team is deep throughout, most matches seem not a sweat at all. We'll see how the cards fall...

RE: UT Tennis 22-23
Both Rocket teams have tough matches today, but both come out on top.

The men beat Binghamton 4-3 to earn a share of the regular season title, tied with WMU. Unfortunately, the tournament will be in Kalamazoo. Not sure how that was determined. Sornlaksup continued his win streak.

The women beat WMU 4-3 to keep their streak alive, now 8-0 in the MAC, with 2 matches remaining. Similarly to the men, the women's tournament will be in Muncie. Wow, how unfair. Rockets potentially to finish 1st in both regular seasons, and will have to travel to their best competitors for the tournament.
