Please explain the soccer stadium proposal
Can someone explain the soccer facility to me please?

Is it to be inside the old coliseum or are they tearing it down for a new small stadium?

It can’t be inside a building. It’s probably like the smaller soccer stadiums around the country. Like the one in Houston. I guess this is their way of getting rid of the coliseum and replacing it with something useful. It’s my understanding that 901 FC can’t play in autozone park for more than 10 years or we will lose the franchise.

Demolish the MSC and build new on the site.

I thought it was on the historic register or something like that.

I had heard prior to this year they were on the verge of folding. They may not even be around in a few years..

Please explain the soccer stadium proposal
The article I read said they wanted to find a way to keep part of the Coliseum when they build the field. it sure how that is going to work or where that was in the rendering.

Rogues had issues playing at the LBS due to the width of the pitch.

One thing not addressed is the number of parking spots that would be lost.

Just about 100% of the area of the MSC and its parking would be taken up.

RE: Please explain the soccer stadium proposal
USL is very healthy from a financial standpoint and not going anywhere. No clue about the 901 financial specifics.

901 FC had the issue of its second season being during COVID. They still haven't fully recovered from that. Attendance before COVID was very healthy. Also watching soccer at Autozone park (or any soccer stadium) is a ****** experience. The sightlines are awful.

The stadium will also be a part of Liberty Park development, which can bring in additional events for soccer. I think they are already building 4 soccer fields as a part of that.

There are also hotels and restaurants in Liberty Park that will benefit from this.

If you think over the long haul, building a soccer stadium is a no brainer.

The drawings seem to show that part of the outer shell of the MSC will be used as part of the soccer stadium facade.

And Strickland was quoted as saying the MSC will be "mostly demolished."

We built a 20,000 seat stadium in 2008, that has amenities, still looks modern and is perfectly functional, for $21 million in today's dollars. I would think that a 10,000 seat stadium scalable for when you get into MLS, would work.

RE: Please explain the soccer stadium proposal
They say MLB is opposed to dual use in baseball facilities. Also that USL requires its own facilities. So trying to accommodate both. Both would become "single use" venues - although Stickland mentioned outdoor concerts at the soccer stadium.

Also trying to figure out the MSC conundrum. There is a local group who seem determined to block demolition. Their spokesman was on the news saying he was still trying to get 3rd party investors to renovate and repurpose the MSC. He said he hoped to force the city to move their soccer plans elsewhere.

Yes, with MLB taking over the minor leagues last year, the Redbirds have to follow some new rules. Of course Yankee Stadium and NYCFC has been sharing for some time.

Yes; MLB now says no other teams can share space at AZP, and USL says all of their teams must have their own facilities by 2026 or move to a city that will provide that.

USL is doing well money-wise - 901FC has had a decline in attendance, but they're also going to the playoffs this weekend for the first time in franchise history. Things can only go up for this sport in Memphis.

As much as I wanted to see the MSC repurposed, no one has come forward willing to do it. If the state gives the funding to create the soccer stadium & surrounding complex, I'm for it.

I'm guessing the soccer fan base is in East Memphis-Germantown. Why not find a location more convenient to the fan base?
