RE: Men’s Basketball Recruiting Thread - 2023
The new assistant coaches that Jeff has added seem to have brought a much-needed breath of fresh air to the program. They - along with Jeff - have already recruited 7 new athletic players for this season, assisted Jeff in changing many of the concepts the team uses on court, and has demonstrated that they are pursuing a higher caliber of player for upcoming recruiting classes. Let's hope that they all have continued success in these areas much as they have in the short time they have been working together.

Daniel Pounds looks like the type of player that should be a joy to watch and do some very nice things on the court for ODU. Welcome to the Monarchs Daniel. I like where this is all headed of late and my optimism for the program is growing accordingly.

Heck, I see in todays paper where W&M recruited the number 26 point guard in the nation. We need to keep up!

Btw, regarding the new guys on this years team. Didn’t the last group of coaches bring those guys in? I mean Richardson was still a coach until late summer wasn’t he?

Yes, and was kind of blindsided by getting let go at the last minute.

Yes, you're right about that Mack. They joined a little bit later in the off season than I remembered.

Like W&M, ODU has a sophomore that was the #27 rated (247 Sports) Point Guard coming out of high school on its team that Jeff decided not to use at Point Guard. Those ratings are nice to see (and recruit), but they don't always pan out as expected. Hope it works out better for W&M.

True dat on players panning out etc. The paper said that the W&M recruit is their highest rated recruit EVER.

Only blindsided if he thought his behavior was beyond reproach. It wasn’t and he justifiably released of all duties. And it was not last minute. It was only last minute being announced. He was let go a long time before the announcement.

Sounds like a great recruit for them and certainly worth taking a chance on.

It's funny that some of the best players to play sports at ODU were lightly recruited out of high school. I think that Twardzik, Heinicke, Bazemore, Freeman, and Hassell fell into that category.

I have no idea what he did or why he was let go. But I did speak with a guy who knows him and talked to him very soon after he was notified in September and it seemed as if he was shocked and never saw it coming.

Pure arrogance then.

So when does the signing period end? Do we have other prospects?

Seems the transfer portal has made early signing far less relevant than it used to be. Pretty much have to wait and see who transfers out of ODU and all other schools before you even begin to speculate.

This year the portal is open from Dec.5 to Jan.18th, then opens again from May 1-15.

So players can transfer mid-season? Or os that early portal window for fall sport athletes?

Portal signing periods are just that. A kid in any college sport has those dates open to opt into the portal. It does not allow for mid-season transfers.

In a lot of cases, schools already know who is coming and going by now. Obviously there will be some surprises after the season tho.

I have mixed feelings about the transfer portal. I really like it when a good player transfer to ODU, and hate it when a good player(s) ... lol
