RE: UT @ NIU Game Thread
And we leave the starting defense out there because we can't cover a kick-off. Hammock being a bit of an a-hole here Toledo should be doing all they can to score - if they can catch a kick-off. You get behind by 38 and then start doing this? Seems to me he is trying to make the loss look better than it is. Just the same, Toledo is signaling to all the other teams on their schedule how bad they are at on-side kick recoveries. Pathetic.

Man, I'd love nothing more that to Mitchell pick another and take it back.

Nope - another score.

They've been on the field for like 12 straight minutes of the game.

And TOP is 34:45 for NIU. 18:55 for UT. Can't blame the D for being tired.

Berg in the game at Tackle. Hope he is completely healed.

And why in the world is Finn in the game. Candle is nuts.

Berg clearly has a lot of pent up frustration. Can't believe he didn't get a penalty there, standing over the NIU player and barking.

Up by 4 TDs with 3 minutes left, and the starters are still in and one gets hurt. I know they are thin at DB, but do they really have no one they can put in?

RE: UT @ NIU Game Thread
Hampton snickered the D there. Someone has to play the receiver, lol. And they get a TD on the same play the fooled the D on the 2-pt conversion. NIU still playing. 25 Q4 pts. Good on them.

Why would ANY team kick-off against us? Take your chances with the on-side. Worst case, you force us to put first line players in to get hurt.

SDSU = 2 punt blocks
NIU = 2 Onside kickoffs

Let's hope that we get rid of this stuff. One each is bad enough but the second of each makes us look a little suspect.

CMU, not SDSU.

But the first 'onside kick' today was not really an onside kick, it was a line drive kicked directly at the UT guy. Not much he could do, even if he was expecting it.

Just read about an OSU player, IIRC, who called for a fair catch on an onside kick. Got the ball and a kick interference call. Maybe our coaches should have thought of that.

Don't think that would have happened if he was expecting it - which you should always be doing. Hit him in the back of the leg/foot (what I saw on the replay) as he turned around to drop back. If he was expecting it and was facing it, all he had to do was let it go through as hard as it was kicked.

RE: UT @ NIU Game Thread
Did Hammock walk off the field without shaking Candle's hand? Looked like he headed toward midfield then took a left turn and headed toward the locker room. Not sure if he got out to Candle before the camera picked him up.

Maybe it's just me, but after the final onside kick attempt with 1:40 left, I would have had Gleason in to fake a kneel and then fire one out to a receiver. Think Hammock would have understood the message? NIU lost the game long before the 4th quarter and the crap he pulled with the multiple onside kicks could have got someone hurt. Glad UT went down and scored that last TD to make it 52-24. Never show mercy to someone that pulls that crap. Must have incentives tied to scores or point margin.

RE: UT @ NIU Game Thread
didn't like having our #1 rb and #1 receiver on the onside recovery team up 20 with under a minute to play. if hammock wants to play like that let him do it against our 2nd string. we win either way.

liked how we used boone late to put em away. he was a great 4th quarter back on that drive, but stop comparing him to scooter. mcdougal had next level first cut quickness and was pretty fast for 15-20 yards along w being huge for a rb. boone is the same size but doesn't have as good first change of direction or acceleration. if mcdougal hadn't blown out a knee he'd have had a great career. the gambling stuff was 2 years later after the injury when it was pretty clear his career was never gonna be the same.

From The Blah's article about the game...

Quote:As Gleason came to the sideline, Finn, who had minor cramps in his forearm and thumb, raced out of the medical tent to congratulate Gleason and give him a bear hug

I disagree with you here.

There was quite a lot of game left when they did the first on-side. Given that worked and how quickly they were scoing, he wouldn't be a head coach if he didn't continue to try and catch up. As fast as they were scoring, it was realistic they could get back in this game, particularly given how fast out D was falling apart. Even mediocre players can look good against gassed starters. The LAST on-side? I'd have to review the score and time when that occurred.
