When watching the 4th quarter of the NIU game, I kept getting flashbacks to a famous HS game where a team recovered several consecutive onside kicks. Finally found the game.

From 1994 in Texas, when trailing 41-17 with 3 minutes left, Plano HS scored, and then successfully recovered 3 straight onside kicks followed by TDs to take the lead with 24 seconds left. Then, well, you should watch the highlights to see what happened then. (Worth watching just to hear the announcers.)

No the Senior, fumbled a punt that set up WMU with the go ahead TD. Then as the Rockets are trying to make a comeback, makes the critical 4th quarter mistake of the helmet to helmet hit, killing the Rocket drive.

The 2020 game with the onside K/O and the fake spike at the goal line for a TD. I wanted to wear a bag over my head because of how embarrassing it was.

That was on a UT punt. I believe it was 2015??, day after Thanksgiving, WMU @ UT, just before halftime, Alonso Russell. I think it pretty much enabled WMU to score before half. UT also had plenty of other mistakes that game, which cost them a MACC appearance.

Different games we lost to WMU 2020 failing to recover an onside kick. Campbells last game we lost when we were driving for the winning score and a Senior Wide receiver was ejected for targeting the same WR Dropped a punt when we had the momentum in the first half.

What cost Toledo an MACC appearance was the Iowa State AD swooping in and plucking our coach before the season had ended!!

Did anyone see the Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech onside kick Saturday. Texas Tech tried and onside kick and an Oklahoma State player, who it was kicked towards, called for a fair catch. By rule, Texas Tech was called for a penalty, for interference a and prevented from getting the ball.

I remember it well. The penalty was not called on the field and Hunt had just broke off a long run to get the ball down to around the WMU 30 yard line. They reviewed it in the booth, called down to the field while the WMU player was laid out on the field, called the penalty and with the play called back, plus the penalty yardage - ended up back at around the 25 yard line of Toledo. I'll have to see if I have that game stored on my DVR. Day after Thanksgiving and a perfect day for football. Wasn't that also the last game for Campbell? WMU came out on our field, fired up even though they couldn't win the West, and took it to us early and often. We looked like it was inter squad scrimmage in April.

Brilliant If thats legal why not call for a fair catch on every onside kick?

That's interesting. Looks like the special teams coach at OSU is up on the rules and coached his players well.

The thing that irritated me about NIU is that after Toledo scored to make it 52-24 with about 4 minutes left. NIU went down and scored - running off over 3 minutes on the clock to score with 48 seconds left. And what do the a-holes do? Try another on-side kick. That should not be forgotten. We also had an injury on that kick. Must suck for Hammock when you're about to be 1-5 and get embarrassed by your "rival" on Homecoming in front of a crowd of less than 13K (according to the game summary). On the bright side, he likely made it to the buffet line at the Golden Corral before they closed.

Did get to knock off #24 Temple in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Russell made a couple bad plays in that game, but he's just an easy scapegoat for the loss. Nobody talks about all the other mistakes in that game. Like after the fumbled punt, it was the D that failed badly when they gave up a 30+ yard screen pass for the late TD. And even after the targetting penalty, UT still had chances, and took the next possession down inside the WMU 15 but couldn't score (including a dropped pass by a different WR as I recall) and then botched a FG try by fumbling the snap. UT later scored a TD which could have been for the tie (if had made the FG) or the win (if they had scored the TD on that earlier drive).

Oh, AND UT still had a chance even then when they tried an onside kick they did not recover. Anybody remember the last time UT recovered an onside kick? I do not.
