Win puts Mustangs in soccer's elite 8
Dallas Morning News - GREENSBORO, N.C. – Goalkeeper Matt Wideman shut the door on UNC Greensboro, making seven saves as SMU knocked out UNC Greensboro with a 3-1 victory in the third round of the NCAA men's soccer tournament Sunday.
SMU (13-5-3), which is 11-1-1 in its last 13 matches, will meet North Carolina in a quarterfinal match at noon Saturday in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels (17-3-3) defeated Virginia, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill.
Wideman came up with a remarkable save with just over 18 minutes left to preserve the Mustangs' 2-1 lead. Randi Patterson's shot was headed toward the center of the goal but deflected off an SMU defender. Wideman was able to react and punch the ball off the crossbar and back into play.
"Best save I've seen all year," said UNC Greensboro coach Michael Parker, the active leader in wins among Division I coaches with 451. "Give SMU a lot of the credit for today. They were outstanding on the counterattack."
SMU scored first at 10:04 on a slow, rolling shot by Paulo da Silva that skipped past Greensboro keeper Jay Benfield.
The Mustangs made it 2-0 at 33:44. Daniel Lopez got to a loose ball and played it ahead to Duke Hashimoto, who beat Benfield one-on-one with a hard shot to the top right corner from 14 yards out.
Greensboro (16-6-1) pulled within one on a header by freshman Thomas Campbell at 36:33. Then the Mustangs got Wideman's clutch save and an insurance own goal at 73:05.
"I was a little more hyped up for this one as we get deeper in the bracket," said SMU coach Schellas Hyndman, who picked up his 434th career win. "This team has been through a lot. We had a tough September and we start four freshmen. They are a little more seasoned now and can play in this type of atmosphere."
SMU is in the NCAA quarterfinals for the 11th time under Hyndman.
