Adding a couple points, I think mbb's o-o-c schedule is made to make money or not spend too much, like last year. If you're gonna get hammered do it on the road where we can turn it off. At least UNI is coming in, when, next year? Not a lot to get excited about.

Wbball I agree totally. Starting off at ND and then here with DePaul is a tough start, but I'd hope for 1-1. Thank goodness Muffett McGraw is not still coaching ND, and while I respect "The Rug" he's getting a little long in the tooth. Hope Chelby Koker doesn't get hit with that post-injury syndrome and comes back nearly (at least) full blast. She was starting to share rather than do it all, and A'Jah Davis is one of my favorites. Pre-season comments by Carlsen put a lot on "veteran" transfers. We'll see.

I think there will be improvement this year. It is another year for the players to gel under Coach Burno's system and I think he is assembling players that fits his system.
I would like to see an improvement in the MAC standings, but at this point, as long as we are competitive in the games with a chance at winning at the end, I view that as a successful improvement.

As for the Ladies, it will be interesting. It seemed they played better without Chelby, which I am hoping that was because the other players stepped up in her absence. If that is the case, I would expect improvement with Chelby back and a top 5 finish in the conference.

The problem here is that this isn't actually the case much.

There are only 5 guys on the team who were on the team last year. Now...those are 5 guys who should be integral to the team success and will be high minute guys (Williams, Thornton, Crump, Hunter, and Russell) but they're entire front court is newcomers. Some of those guys look interesting (mostly Amos and Niederhäuser) but I have no idea who will actually be playing back there.

I suppose of the newcomers, I'm most intrigued by the two I just mentioned (Amos/Niederhäuser) and then Coit and Nutter.

I have no idea about Youngblood, Plintasukas or Durosinmi. Both big strong dudes who may or may not be worth a damn. The thing about Durosinmi is he has a year in a D1 program so, that can be okay. Crump had a similar background and it took about 3 years for me not to hate him.

Funny thing is, I could probably write about 15 paragraphs about this roster and really most of it would be speculation a lot of "ifs".

I can't wait to see this team on the floor. It'll be interesting to see the international guys come together with our more domestic guys.

And I still have no idea whatever happened to Martice Mitchell. He doesn't have any activity on twitter although, I think he changed his profile picture. I want to say it used to be a pic of him in an NIU jersey but now its a pic of Daffy Duck lighting a cigar with a rolled up 100 dollar bill. So...whatever. Plus, almost all online sites have him as playing for NIU but we all know that isn't true.

I am not a subscriber but here are KenPom's preseason rankings. I do not know how he goes from last season to a preseason ranking but he is well respected and it gives us an idea where the Huskies stand (although we had an idea we would still be in the 300 range, give or take a few). Just listing the MAC and our nonconference opponents.

At least Toledo is the top of the MAC. Mostly due to their #1 recruiting class.

It's at least some measure to consider, so thanks for posting. I especially like seeing that opponents were pulled and listed in one place. Hopefully NIU plays higher than the numbers given, though Gonzaga and Northwestern and VCU ... well ... .

RE: Basketball is Just Around the Corner!
This is a rough OOC scheduled filled with lots of away games. The team does not have a home game in a 5-week period beginning mid-November. I do not expect them to fare well with this schedule. It could prepare the team well for the MAC schedule, or it could demoralize them to the point they also get crushed by the MAC teams.

RE: Basketball is Just Around the Corner!
I'm interested to see how the team does this year - like everyone I don't really no what to expect from the team this year.

With that said - I did like what we saw from Coach Burno in year 1. They played a lot of MAC teams tough, got the P5 win over Washington (who finished in the top half of the PAC12 if I am recalling correctly), and I liked what I saw from Burno's offensive system (finally a team that can shoot 3's).

I want to see Keshawn Williams take another step forward, has the skill to be a Eugene German like force on offense. I'm curious to see how quickly Niederhauser can acclimate to the collegiate game, and hopefully there is something there with Amos although he didn't look as dominant in the state tournament with Whitney Young as I would have hoped. Not sure there's the talent yet to be one of the top teams in the league, but I think they can play with and beat anyone in the MAC on any given night.

Considering a decent percentage of the guys (plus the graduations from last year) providing a roster that is fairly different from last year and consisting of more than a few players from oversees, I imagine getting any kind of read on how good or bad this team is will take well into the conference season to figure out.

RE: Basketball is Just Around the Corner!
I was actually thinking about the basketball team yesterday and trying to figure out who the starters would be.

Gotta figure Kaleb Thornton and Keshawn Williams are staples.

After that, I started thinking we may see an all "G" lineup (and I put the G in quotation marks for a reason I'll give you in a minute).

After Thornton and Williams, I first thought it would be Zion Russell but then I thought....hey...Zarique Nutter might actually be a pretty decent scorer and he's 6'6" so that gives some size on the wing vs Russell who is 6'0" and maybe a platoon partner with Thornton.

Then, when I got inside I got less confident. For one, I think Crump will be our "big", and....he's probably earned it.

The 5th starter, I'm a little unsure of. Ultimately, I'd definitely like to see Niederhäuser take over that post spot but I think we might see Darweshi Hunter start the season as a starter (much like last year).

He's pretty reliable in what to expect and probably isn't going to screw up much. Kind of a low ceiling but higher kinda floor type of guy.

So, that would be a starting 5 of:

G - Kaleb Thornton
G - Keshawn Williams
G - Darweshi Hunter
G - Zarique Nutter
"F" - Anthony Crump

Crump is the reason I put the G (and now the F) in quotation marks because he's always been listed as a guard (and utilized as a guard by Montgomery) but has been used inside as a forward by Burno, which I think suits him better because he's not handling the ball as much.

It's not the most inspiring lineup and, hopefully at some point we get Amos and Niederhäuser in as starters. Coit could probably also start and should provide scoring from either the starting lineup or the bench.

RE: Basketball is Just Around the Corner!
David Coit led the Huskies with 57 points in the 3 games in Canada so I would expect him to be their main scorer along with Nutter and Williams.

Those games were against teams that are basically JUCO or NAIA level. I do think Coit will score and will be a contributor to the team but it has nothing to do with how he played against the Canadian teams.

I could be wrong on this, but I could see Coit as a 6th man-Vinnie Johnson type of player. From his highlight tape, he seems to a type of player to bring in when you need instant offense.

It is indeed true! Some of the January game tickets are spelled "Janaury", and some of the February tickets are spelled "Febuary".

Gotta cut them some slack. These were probably set up by students and they may not have taken the spelling course yet. I believe that is a senior level course.

I think this is a realistic view to take. Obviously, a guy like Thorpe came in as a JUCO transfer and started and was a key player. And I suppose you could also point to Thornton but he's clearly not the impactful player Thorpe was.

Coit is a bit undersized and doesn't (as far as I can tell) handle the ball so he's going to get his points off picks and movement. He's going to find it harder to find open space or shooting room at the D1 level but, from every thing I've seen, the dude can shoot lights out so if they can get him any kind of separation, he should do fine, but I don't think we'll quite see the 30 points per game he put up in JUCO.

Spell check is an advanced concept. I think that's taught in grad school.

And now this…..I received a HAF email update today. It had a highlighted sentence…..”both Huskies basketball teams are hosting Huskie Madness on Wednesday, October 27”…….. PLEASE NOTE: Wednesday is October 26th NOT the 27th…..AND October 27th is Thursday and NOT Wednesday.

I mean can they get anything right?

Obviously, not.

The Athletics dept. just does things to get them off their plate, and they do not proof anything they do. They can’t even look at a calendar! Trouble with dates and the spelling of months. Can you imagine if we did a schlock job like this at work? This is so freaking sad and embarrassing.

I cannot imagine this happening on Mike Korcek watch.
