Question RE: 2022 MLB Playoffs (Postseason) Thread
managerial changes in the next week when the regular season ends:

Quote:The Miami Marlins will be searching for someone to replace Don Mattingly, who will not return with the team in 2023. Astros bench coach Joe Espada, who worked seven years for the organization, or Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro could be natural fits. The two have interviewed for at least 13 managerial openings in the past and have come up empty.

The Texas Rangers are expected to look for a permanent manager with interim Tony Beasley unable to turn things around. The Rangers have lost 27 of 42 games under Beasley’s watch. Former Cardinals manager Mike Shildt could be the answer, future Hall of Fame manager Bruce Bochy should have interest, and former Astros manager Bo Porter could be a candidate for a number of openings.

The Los Angeles Angels would love to have Bochy, too, but with the franchise up for sale, it’s possible they stick with interim Phil Nevin (44-57) one more season. If not, former Rockies manager Walt Weiss, now Atlanta’s bench coach, could be the favorite. Former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons, who was with GM Perry Minasian in Toronto, should also be under consideration.

Dusty Baker is in the final year of his contract with the Astros, and would like to have at least one more year. It should be a lock, but playing deep into October will make it a no-brainer.

The Kansas City Royals fired Dayton Moore, their beloved president of baseball operations, last week. Considering Royals manager Mike Matheny was hired by Moore, he likely will be gone too after this year’s dismal season. Quatraro, who was Cleveland’s bench coach when Royals owner John Sherman was part-owner of the Guardians, may be the favorite along with Royals bench coach Pedro Grifol.

and LaRussa will retire from managing due to health so White Sox will be lookin' as well.

RE: 2022 MLB Playoffs (Postseason) Thread
so who do folks think could be a surprise coaching change?

a few possible to me:
1- Terry Francona- I think if they won the title, he would probably ride off into the sunset.
2- Craig Counsell Brewers
3- Kevin Cash Rays

not saying that'd happen, but if it did, wouldn't be the biggest shocker at all.

I certainly think Counsell is vulnerable, but in truth it would be as a fall guy for what team amanagement did. It's not Counsell's fault. He'd catch on somewhere else for sure, though.

BTW--Cubs are...give me a minute..

I could see it where Counsell leaves on his own doing- been there a long time.

Question RE: 2022 MLB Playoffs (Postseason) Thread
Quote:"The first tournament's over. Now the big tournament starts," Freddie Freeman said. "No one cares what your numbers were, how many wins you had. Starting Tuesday, it's first one to 11."

True dat. Just about any team in it can win it. Regular season stats matter not. There are so many good teams in this year it should be a heckuva battle in both leagues. No shame in not winning, as every team has capabilities and flaws...well, maybe the Dogs and Yankers don't have flaws, but everyone else sure does. i do think Yankers-Dogs WS is most likely. But would love to see Braves sneak in there again for a chance at a repeat, of course. Jansen being the liability he is, and with Strider uncertain to even pitch, much less pitch well, plus the inevitable hitting slump that's gotta be coming, I don't think it's very likely with the power teams we got to face, unfortunately. And with Dogs hungrier than ever, and wanting to make amends for last year's postseason, and they have the home field again, I don't see us as likely getting by them if we make it to NLCS unless they implode.

Feel-good team to go deep in AL: Mariners, long overdue for some postseason success and a nice young team. NL: probably Padres, who have the potential to upset the Dogs, but the Metz want to prove that they were legit this year (they were--not a collapse by them as much as Braves just played out of control well after their crazy slow start.)

My bold pick for upset 1st round..... Philly. They have Wheeler, Nola, and Suarez to start and the offense can score some runs.

Francona has had health issues, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he retired.

3 of 4 visiting teams won the first game of a three game series. Stay tuned for columns and blog posts in StL, NY, and Toronto advocating for 5 game WC series.

Couldn’t be happier to see this as a Dodgers fan, not to mention Scherzer looking human in the postseason. Again.

so how many teams get knocked out today? I say 2 today. I think Cleveland knocks out Tampa Bay and I think Philly knocks out St Louis.

Rays with 3 hits in the first 14 innings of the series.

ETA: Pretty remarkable. It’s now the 13th inning and we’re at 7 hits for both teams.

Cleveland bats .171/.222/.250 .472 OPS for the series. And sweeps the series.

This is how you know it’s MLB post season. Edwin Diaz enters the game for the Mets in the 7th. Honestly it’s a very understandable move. One run lead in an elimination game. But not without risk…
