RE: 2022 MAC Bowl Picture
(11-26-2022 10:13 PM)Sellers dweller Wrote: Thanks to last week's snow storm the regular season, and bowl picture, isn't quite clear yet. With their lose to Kent State today Buffalo falls to 5-6, but they have their match up with Akron to get to 6-6. As I'm writing this there are currently 81 bowl eligible teams for 82 sports. Miami (FL) and Vanderbilt both have a chance to get to 6-6, however they are both losing badly, so Buffalo will probably have a chance to be the 82nd team. If they don't get that sixth win a 5-7 team will get to go to a bowl.
Bowl eligible
Ohio (9-3)
Eastern Michigan (8-4)
Toledo (7-5)
Bowling Green (6-6)
Miami (6-6)
Need one more wins
Buffalo
Eliminated
Akron
Northern Illinois
Western Michigan
Kent State
Central Michigan
Ball State
The MAC title game will be Saturday, but Friday afternoon we'll get one last regular season game:
Friday's game
Akron @ Buffalo: I'd like Akron to win this game, but I guess it's what you think is more valuable. If Akron wins that means only five MAC schools will be bowl eligible, I like being able to say the majority of the MAC did NOT make a bowl and we are NOT the majority. If Buffalo wins it does add a win against a bowl team to our resume.
Sellers, thank you for doing this all year. I always look forward to reading these posts.
Miami and Vanderbilt are officially out.
Buffalo will clearly be favored at home against Akron, but look at what the Zips did to NIU today! They are playing better, and Joe Morehead always makes them dangerous.
One interesting note: New Mexico State is currently 5-6. They had a game against San Jose State cancelled earlier this year. They will replace that game with a game against an FCS team. Since they already beat an FCS team earlier this year (Lamar), I wonder if they would be bowl eligible even if they win and finish 6-6? I seem to remember a rule that stated that a team can only count one FCS victory toward bowl eligibility. Anyway, something to watch.
I’m kind of rooting for Buffalo, simply because I like seeing the MAC fill its bowl allotments.

No problem, glad you guys enjoy it!
That is interesting about New Mexico State. I think you are right (or at least were right) about the rule that you can only count one FCS towards your six, that was why we didn't go to a bowl in 2011 at 6-6. I say you at least were right because they seem to change these rules all the time so I'm not sure if that is still the case or not.
I wonder if Buffalo were to lose if they would then take New Mexico State even with two FBS wins since there would be an open bowl spot.
EDIT: College football news had this explanation in their bowl projections this morning:
Quote:Just when this was all supposed to clear up before the big weekend of championship games, everything got more bizarre.
The College Football Playoff picture, though, actually became easier. The problem over the next week will be figuring out the bowl spots without enough teams to fill the games.
82 teams need to be eligible to play in the bowl games, and at the moment there aren’t enough with six wins. Only one of those can be against an FCS team.
Buffalo plays Akron this Friday – that should be a sixth win if all goes well. That’s one hole likely filled.
Appalachian State has six wins but two of them came against FCS teams. Without enough eligible teams, the call is that the rule gets blown off. That’s another – maybe. We still need a few more options.
5-6 New Mexico State might try to pick up a game to get eligible, but it already has a win over Lamar from the FCS. Army has two FCS wins, but its problem is timing. The bowls need to get going after next weekend, and the 5-6 Knights don’t play Navy until December 10th.
And then there’s APR.
For a full explanation and a ranking of all the teams according to their Academic Progress Report, check it out here.
If the bowls need 5-7 teams, APR determines the pecking order. Rice is the top APR-ranked 5-7 team, UNLV is second. If more teams are needed, Michigan State and Auburn – tied in APR behind the Owls and Rebels – would be possibilities.

2022 MAC Bowl Picture
Funny reading twitterverse. The comments from B10 fans are basically that the QL bowl against a MAC team is something to laugh about. It's completely irrelevant to them and is used as a joke. Oh well, here's hoping EMU takes on Minnesota in the QL. Beating them would give something for young Mr. Viotto to think about.

The Big Ten likely won't have a team in the QL Bowl. They have a pecking order of:
1. Rose Bowl
2. Citrus Bowl
3. Outback Bowl (it has some new name now)
4. Duke's May Bowl
5. Music City Bowl
6. Pinstripe Bowl
7. Guaranteed Rate Bowl
8. Quick Lane Bowl
They have nine bowl eligible teams, however UofM, OSU, and PSU will probably all go to New Year Six games. Meaning their #4 team (Purdue?) will probably be slotted into their #2 bowl (Citrus). That means their #9 team (Wisconsin?) would likely be slotted for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl.

Also seeing a few sources putting EMU in the Camellia Bowl vs App State.

The Arizona Bowl tweeted out today that their "final eight" are: Eastern, BG, Ohio, Toledo, Boise State, Fresno State, San Jose State, and Wyoming.
Now, the Arizona Bowl is one with a direct MAC tie-in. The MAC currently has five bowl eligible teams and one of them (Miami-OH) have already accepted a bid to the Bahamas Bowl....so of course the other four MAC school would be finalist.
So that tweet from the Arizona Bowl basically means nothing, however it seems like multiple posters have been hearing the same thing about Arizona being the spot.

what are the remaining bowl game options?
1. Arizona
2. Camelia
3. QL
4. Bahamas (taken)
5 Lending Tree
6. Potato Bowl
7. ???

Weatherbe said on last week's podcast that ESPN gets the first choice of a Mac School for one of the ESPN bowls. Then Barstool (Arizona) gets the next choice. Not sure what the plan is after that. I would guess that ESPN will take Ohio or Toledo with the first choice. Not sure what bowl game they would put them in though. Second choice would be one of the other three or four Mac schools.
I'll take a wild guess that the survey Eastern did had the Quick Lane as the most preferred game for Eastern fans.
My prediction is Eastern goes to the Quick Lane against either Connecticut or Rice.
