Sonny Wilson Verbals!
Sonny Wilson just gave Toledo a verbal commit via his Twitter account. Excellent point guard pick up for The Rockets as they continue to recruit well in Michigan thanks in part to Assistant Coach Justin Ingram!

Hey B-jones - Great news!!!!! I just checked his twitter and was excited to see his tweet! You beat me to post the news but was damn happy to see the thread up!

yeah - he's a real keeper. One of the highest rated PG's in the country. Hopefully his stars match his future. I thought we'd get him. Two of his Youtube videos show TK on the sideline at his AAU games so I knew TK had a significant presence in his decision.

Good news. Seems like a good 3 man class. I think we might take a 4th player - not sure. If we do it must be a TRUE 4 or 5. We have 2 seniors. Not likely for a 4th. Thoughts??????? I only wish we got a true big man. We're losing two forwards in Shumate and Milner. Thomas if a 3/4 and Lewis is a 2/3. I hope the staff filled slots correctly. Guys - I'd appreciate comments on how we recruited vs needs.

Go Rockets!

great pickup, but where is a big man (6-9, 235) ? I know Coach K is trying so hard to land one, but can't seen to do it.

RE: Sonny Wilson Verbals!
biggest recruit comes last (at least for now) as the Rockets fill their 3rd open slot. wilson has always been a real good prospect. was even more highly rated as a sophomore. his only sins are not getting any taller after 15 and having a game that isn't flashy. what i think his best skill is from the little I know, is that he can play his game and be efficient when the level of competition increases. doesn't really matter who is on him, he can make space w quickness and skill and pop up for a smooth mid range jumper. reminds me a bit of juice brown, who was shorter and had a prettier game, in how they are too quick, skilled and confident to get rattled at the point. the ratings on sonny wilson range, but in general he's one of the highest ranked HS recruits we've had in the TK years. props to Justin Ingram who is our primary Michigan HS recruiter. He's had a good 2022 on the recruiting trail.

as far as the recruiting for need and overall class ranking perspective... we did need a true pg this class or would be breaking in a brand new one in 2024-5. coincidentally, UT just offered a 2024 PG from the Dominican Rep who is really good-could prob play some off guard too. We also need to replace shumate and milner. So, either the staff thinks the guys they've got on the roster now are developing into quality replacements, or we see 1 or 2 guys transfer out after the season and we add new forwards.

Thomas is a bit of everything, 6-5 under the rim widebody who can handle, drive, shoot, rebound, be a glue guy, etc... closer in role to a raheem moss than a PF. Lewis is a true wing player/swingman who has big time defensive talent and is playing his final HS year at Simeon in the Chicago PSL-one of the top public school programs in the US. this trio is a very high level group in terms of intensity, leadership, level of competition.

our season practice just started this week. so, there's over 5 months for these kids to play ball. i won't project the roster beyond what we now know and prefer to enjoy the games and player development. we know we are stacked at guard for years to come. we can guess about our future frontcourt.
Edu: will he stay healthy and come back for his 6th year? petition for a 2nd medical rs and play a 7th year?
Lorentsson: has his great first impression been premature? can he be the next shumate? a shooter who thrives in our system and learns how to get better in other parts of his game?
Jacobi: will his improved strength and athleticism translate to being a better finisher? does he stick w UT even if he remains a bench player as he gets older.
Simmons: the staff was really high on him coming in. how do they feel in March? does he RS? can he emerge as a physical presence and look like a future starter?

what we know is that this year's team is looking good and next year's 13 scholarships are filled and there really doesn't seem to be any filler. could UT buck the trend and not have a single 2023 transfer?

Another good local to the staff's resume. This is great. This city went wrong when they didn't follow my suggestion decades ago to organize dances for the big and tall. Would have helped us in two sports.

RE: Sonny Wilson Verbals!
related reruiting news as 2023 PG offer Tyshawn Archie commits to James Madison. Archie was likely our #2 PG prospect after Wilson and it would have been a shock for him to also commit to UT. Wilson was higher rated by scouting services but Archie had more and higher profile offers. Personally, I was a bigger fan of Archie based on video. His game is really fun to watch. Similar to Wilson in that both are somewhat smaller very quick true points that have no trouble creating space and tend to look for their shot. Will be interesting to see how their parallel careers evolve. JMU has upped their athletic level and is poised to be more prominent mid major in hoops and football.
