Its a little complicated. You can't fly into Jonesboro directly, so any team coming in has to Fly to Memphis, and then bus up here. Many stay overnight in Memphis and make the hour drive up the day of the game. That's because until we opened the Embassy Suites a couple years ago, we didn't have a hotel in the county capable of hosting an FBS football team. Embassy Suites can and has hosted both our team and the visiting team on the day of a game before.

You actually pay for a hotel for your players who live locally?

I'm almost positive JMU has been doing this for years.

It also makes sure the coaches can keep a closer eye on the team the night before the game.

Years, yes. Decades actually.

Not doing this got Texas A&M players in hot water and suspended a few weeks ago. Granted that is definitely low on the ongoing list of problems for Jimbo Fi$her these days.

I have Hulu so I guess I get NFL network, but yeah- folks absolutely have a right to complain about this. We finally get on a national sports network that's a few bucks a month with tons of other content, and our first season they're already pushing games on more obscure and expensive providers?

I'm all for freedom of choice and a free market economy, but it really sucks when you have to cobble together a dozen streaming platforms and providers, and still get nickel and dimed.

I have several friends that went to PAC12 schools. The PAC12 Network is not carried by many cable or streaming services. They struggle weekly to watch their games.

NFL network is not obscure. It's carried by many providers, unless you don't have cable, satellite package that had it. Pac12, is well, like Flo...always trying to find Flo.

And if you want to be super cheap, you could do a free trial of any of the providers just for this one week. NFL Network reaches far more homes than ESPN+ and we are going to be on primetime. Again, some of you will literally find anything to complain about.

RE: JMU at AState 10/8 picked up by NFL Network
NFL Network has a pretty good reach. I live out in the Midwest and I can tell you that most bars out in my parts will have NFL Network playing just about all of the time. They like the Badgers and Gophers here but the Packers, Vikings, and NFL reign supreme.

I have not been able to publicly watch our games with my friends because many bars do not carry Flo or even ESPN+. However, we were at one bar this past Saturday with NFL Network playing that night instead of Clemson/NC State (common here). As we looked up at the TV, an ad started playing for our game. This prompted my friends to start talking about the start to the season for us. This is very good national exposure for us.

I live in a Pac12 state and most bars here don't even carry it. Definitely a bummer.

FuboTV carries it and I believe they have a 7 day trial.

I have had the service for about a year and have been very happy.

Just in the last few years, if you've ever stayed at Hotel Madison, you would know that the team stays there. Prior to that I am not sure where they stayed but I thought it was fairly common knowledge that the team stayed in hotels to avoid distractions.

My understanding is that the team did not stay in hotels until the first year of Coach Houston. The team used Alpha Dog funds because it wasn’t in the normal football operating budget. They have stayed in hotels for home games since.

Do we know which announcing team will do the game for NFL Network? That tends to make or break the watching experience when both teams are mostly unknown to national broadcasters.

BTW, here is a good article outlining Arkinsaw State’s change from Indians to Red Wolves. It is definitely worth the read. Threats from the NCAA to ban them from postseason and monetary concerns drove the decision.

What is ironic is that the NCAA is now headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Yet they pressured Arkinsaw State to drop the Indians name 01-wingedeagle

Arkansas State Indians change nickname

"When I look at Arkansas State, it's not a question of them saying, 'we want to honor natives now' or 'we recognize what we did was bad now, What they're saying is, 'we recognize now this is bad for our public image and that it impacts our financial bottom line if we're banned from hosting tournament play and banned from representing our school the way we need to do it.”

“ the cost of keeping the mascot and the legal battle that would follow would have cost the school more than $200,000. According to USA Today, Arkansas State's 2008 athletics budget was just over $8.3 million.”

In the end, those threats were what made the final call, but portions of the fan base began to recognize that something would need to happen a year or two earlier. I actually wrote a paper my Junior year outlining why I thought we needed to change the name then.

We had been slowly phasing out most of our Indian mascot traditions for 3 seasons before the final switch. The Indian Family vanished in 2004 along with the original logo to be replaced by a cartoon mascot named "Red" and the block stAte logo that is still the Universities logo today. Literally, by the time we made the switch the only thing we hadn't done was change the actual nickname.

In the end, it turned out to be the best decision our university made in the last 15 years. Money went up significantly from merchandise sales for the next 5-7 years after the switch. Red Wolves was an easy sell.

I hate to add fuel to Hart's fire, but I basically hate all things NCAA, and I mean come on, that is too rich to ignore.

Red Wolves is a badass mascot, with tons and tons of potential for logos and uniforms. That's why I wanted it so badly for the "Commanders" but honestly that franchise doesn't deserve it currently lol

From 2006 to 2008, our football team did not stay in local hotels. I can attest to this because my son-in-law was home every pre-game night.

Interesting. I kind of assumed most old school coaches would want to go that route in order to limit distractions, and Mickey seems as old school as they come! Any insight (from Purple or otherwise) on whether they had previously done this under Mickey or his predecessors?

The budget wasn’t there during MM’s tenure, or before his time. I’m not even sure there would have been a local hotel/motel that could have accommodated the team.

I’m fairly certain that TxGiant is correct, and the pre-night hotel stay started with Houston.

I believe that is correct. I know my son-in-law was at home the night before all of his home games under The Mick.

I agree. The hypocrisy is too rich to ignore. ASU fans should start a nationwide campaign to force the NCAA to move from such a politically-incorrect city and state and demand that they move to Snowflake, Arizona. I will sign on!
