2022 Football Week 5 vs Ohio
Made it through the gauntlet without any major injuries (that I am aware of). Got the expected results of 1-3, but eclipsed all expectations by being relatively competitive in all contests. Schlee has been impressive in his first few starts against a murderers row of defenses, hoping to see him shining against our MAC peers. Ohio is 2-2 with two sound defeats and 2 close wins over bad programs, Fordham put up 52 and blew the game; Fordham is not a very good program in a not very good football conference in FCS. Would like to see up hang 52 on ‘em as well but tighten up the defense.

Correction:

Fordham came into that game with a record of 3-0 and a #18 ranking in the country in FCS. I wouldn't call them a bad program.

PS-They are in the same conference as Holy Cross which has a win over the MAC this year.

Maybe “bad program” is not the right use of words, but they shouldn’t equate with MAC programs. Anyone outside roughly the top 5-8 in FCS should be a warmup game for even an average MAC program. Holy Cross and Fordham can be ranked all they want, they won’t even advance in the FCS playoffs.

I just wanted to be clear, that's all. i mean it's not like we were playing St. Francis and had to go to overtime to win. i mean, who does that?! LOL

And that’s the thing, there’s an obvious step down in levels but most importantly is the reduced scholarship limits from 85 to 63 when going from FBS down to FCS. But some of these schools are in conferences that have even lower limits like 40-45, and they should not be playing MAC schools so tight when you have 1/2 the scholarships to dole out. Those programs play their conference mates all year and put up nice records, then get beat in the playoffs by the better FCS programs. Even if in the top 15, they’d get crushed by the upper level FCS programs like NDSU.

Hey, if you're trying to win points here by dunking on our financially irresponsible neighbors to the south... It worked.

I don't take Ohio for granted. While the KSU program is vastly improved over the last four years, they haven't got to the point where they can just phone it in against anyone in the MAC.

This is a game we should win with relative ease, which makes it the proverbial trap game.

Holy Cross beat Buffalo who then thumped Eastern Michigan who
the week before beat Arizona St …. So go figure .

Kinda of like how #15 teams usually get crushed by Alabama etc. Same is true in D3. You have to wonder how that happens. Not just in football either.

RE: 2022 Football Week 5 vs Ohio
You can have FBS, FCS, D2 and D3 as huge diving levels, mostly playing within the same rules in their tier. But once inside each tier you have huge separations based a lot on commitment. We might be D1 (FBS) but we’re light years away in budget/resources from a Bama. Even in FBS you don’t just have P5 and G5 with a huge difference between, you have the elite programs (Bama, Georgia, Clemson etc.) on the top of the P5 programs that are farther above their conference peers (Miss St., Purdue etc.) as those teams are of us. The further you get away from the elite programs the more obvious the commitment level$ get exposed. The SEC spends almost 6x as much money on football as the MAC. Click on FCS power teams like NDSU and you’ll see they spend more than us. In 2021 our athletics spent roughly $21.8mil, median FBS was $61.7mil while median FCS was $15mil, not hard to see we’re dragging down the FBS numbers and are closer to the FCS while the P5 elites are closer to the pros.

RE: 2022 Football Week 5 vs Ohio
Per The Athletic today.

Ga Tech and others could be calling soon.

Sean Lewis, Kent State,

The 36-year-old took over a terrible program and has built it into one of the MAC’s better teams. After a run of six losing seasons, Lewis sparked the school to its first-ever bowl win. Lewis has really impressed people around the sport who have gotten to know him and see what he’s about. I think he could be also in play at Arizona State. His team is 1-3 right now, but those losses all came on the road and against top 15 opponents: Washington, Oklahoma and Georgia. It probably didn’t hurt Lewis’ cause that Kent State gave the Bulldogs some problems in Athens before losing 39-22. If he gets his team rolling again this season heading into MAC play, expect his stock to rise pretty quickly.

Kudos to him if they come calling, i appreciate what he’s done to turn the culture around. I think he’s headed out very soon, especially if we finish this season strong.

We are absolutely not good enough to overlook anyone. A good game plan with a focused group of young men, and we should have the result we all desire.

RE: 2022 Football Week 5 vs Ohio
Agree, Polish Hammer. I've been pointing out for years that even within P5 there are great disparities. Take, for example, Ohio State. They have more 5-star recruits currently on their roster than the rest of the Big Ten combined. Alabama has the same number, and Georgia two more. It's not a given that those are the top 3 ranked teams right now, but it's not a surprise either. And it's all about the money. And it has become a vicious circle, which is why it is so difficult to move significantly up the pecking order and difficult to move down unless a program really mucks things up, such as with a series of poor coaching hires. There have always been traditionally strong programs, but things weren't nearly so sclerotic when I first started following college football many moons ago, or even as recent as forty years ago.

College football has become European soccer. Every country has a top league and every top league has two or three teams that are always in the top three or four. The read of the league is for fodder and the interesting play comes in their version of the playoffs (Champions League). I don't find it very compelling myself, but I'm sure fans of Ohio State are just fine with it.
