FWIW Ky was #8 and wil most likely drop because of how we played them.

That being said this is he same team that struggled with EIU.

1. 29 the freshman looked very good at field corner. Still need to figure out if 2 can play. Don't know if he played better today or if he got moved to boundary corner and that helped some.

2. 6 and 7 is a much better safety combination than anything with 21.

3. I can see why like 9 but he misses a bunch of tackles. It's hard to take
him out because he still does some really nice things. Tough to do in season but maybe 9 and 3 should be the starting LBs

4. Two rough plays for him but 23 may be the Huskie
Really good observations.

Knighten (29) had a heck of a debut.

2 (Byrd) can play, he just needs to keep getting experience. He tends to let his eyes wander to things that aren't his responsibility, and as a DB your feet are tied to your eyes. It comes from a combo of him wanting to be in on every play instead of just doing his 1/11th, and getting confused about where his responsibilities are in combo coverages. He was better tonight, it only happened once. He was actually better with his eyes last year, but I think he wants so badly to "take the next step," but as CB you have no control over how much you are involved in the game. You just have to stay patient, play your role on every play and let the game come to you. I think he will get it figured out.

6 (Hansen) and 21 (Jammeh) are 6 of one, half dozen of the other. Hansen reads and recognizes well, but is an inferior athlete. Jammeh is a tremendous athlete but is lost mentally right now. Considering he is in his 5th game getting snaps at safety as a true soph, that isn't altogether surprising. He has way more upside, but Hansen is more ready now. Tough call to make, hence the constant rotating.

9 (Rayner) is so FAST, but sometimes he does a very poor job of throttling that speed down, breaking down, and making the tackle in space.

23 (White) I think is still playing catch up on learning the defense, but from what I saw of him at YSU, he will definitely be a player for NIU sooner or later.

Knighten looked great out there. I think overall, the secondary looked better covering.

Good observation on Byrd. My thoughts were his footwork looked so bad all year. Your analysis makes more sense. He's playing with a sense of hesitancy, trying to do too much, and looking lost in the process.

I've said it since last year. Hansen is a smart and gritty player. He just doesn't have the athleticism to play at an FBS level. However, he would make All-American playing at D2 or D3. I personally think he's got to be kept off the field. He's too much of a liability to be back there.

In other news. I wish we played Northwestern this year. The annual football crown of Illinois looks like it remains in Carbondale.

It would make sense then that he was better whenever he was playing in the boundary. Less to look at.

Looking at the box score and the first names of the top 4 tacklers from last night's game are: Daveren, Demond, Devin and Devonte. I just thought that was interesting.

Figure that one out, SIU gets trounced 3 weeks ago but the University of Incarnate Word and then beats Northwestern.

That University of Incarnate Word might be the next Appalachian State when they were in FCS.

I hate "moral victories" but the Dawgz played well and kept up with the #8 team. Nothing against Hampton but I think the last two games would have been different with Rocky at the helm.

Good to see a little mixed play calling on the offense, too.

This was a great call to end the half. Certainly had Kentucky fooled. Too bad we reverted to turtle shell the entire 3rd qtr.

Kentucky is overrated. We sacked the QB 5 times. Even though they were doen to 3rd string running back, they really didn't win the battle in the trenches.

Kentucky will be fine. They were 12 of 18 on 3rd & 4th downs and get another NFL player back next week. They are one of 21 remaining undefeated teams.

Michigan didn't look that good vs. Maryland. Ole Miss barely beat Tulsa. USC needed a last minute score to beat Oregon St. Georgia was a 44 point favorite and only led Kent St by 10 points in 4th qtr.

Very few teams are going to dominate their opposition every single week.

Laughing at all the UM snobs down here after the Canes got owned by Middle Tennessee, a team that only put up 120 yards the week before against James Madison. The Canes were.....were... ranked at #25.
The major school fans always have the same snobbery, saying "a school we never heard of". I hear that about NIU a lot, and my response is "don't get out much, do you".

I thought that Stoops adjustment at half time was spot on when he saw the run game and the pass rush were hurting UK. Quick outs, 5 yard sprints over the middle, mix it up with a couple of long passes that worked in the first half. There’s the difference between an experienced coaching staff and one that’s still in a learning mode. It seemed as the causal observer that I am, that the UK staff had several playbook options to go to depending on the game flow. Having a pretty good QB and receiving tandem helped also. I sincerely hope that Hammock and Company took notes.
