Perhaps nothing about Trump's political successes has ever surprised me more than the fact that his candidacy for the GOP nomination was not swiftly ended by his comments about Senator McCain. Whether you liked his politics or not, McCain was a bona fide war hero. Shows just how fast and hard the GOP has fallen from the party of Reagan over the past 25 years. The GOP that was enraged by Clinton's avoidance of service in the 1990s would never have nominated anyone who made similar comments about a war hero like Bob Dole, for instance.

If NW Ohio chooses JR Majewski over Rep. Marcy Kaptur then the Buckeye State is truly lost to MAGA. I think she'll be fine though, she's the longest currently serving woman in Congress and has never received less than 55% of the vote (that was back in 1984).

McCain was a war hero? I understand the logic behind the comment, just don’t agree with it. A hero is someone who takes specific action where they abandon their own self interest in order to protect their unit. It’s the guy who picks up the flame thrower and charges the bunker, it’s the guy who dives on the grenade.

McCain survived an intense personal test in captivity. That makes him a survivor, not a hero.

Maybe I misheard the story, but didn't they torture him for years to give up information on his country and/or fellow servicemen...but he never did?

Sounds pretty heroic to me.

Exactly. By any measure that is heroic. I never particularly was a fan of the guy but I considered him a war hero. 07-coffee3

Well said.

More than anything, I considered John McCain a decent honorable man who was willing to fight for our freedoms. And when Don T. disrespected McCain by saying, "I like people who weren't captured" — while Trump himself didn't have the ballsack to serve ... sheer beauty (sarcasm intended).

Many posters on this board support Trump's policies, judicial picks, etc. Understandable and reasonable. I get it. But if they can't criticize Don T. for a statement like that (and there were seemingly hundreds) ... I know everything I need to know about them.

Just like I know what I need to know about lefties who can't criticize Nancy Pelosi and her ilk.

Such partisan homers are basically the same people — with different agendas.

Pitiful.

I see no reason why irreverence for a political figure makes one irredeemable.

Personally, I think McCain’s war hawkish stance and willingness to vote for continual death was a betrayal of everything a “war hero” would stand for.

Irreverence is the only true protection for democracy.

John McCain was garbage, war medals or not.

Trump’s statement was irreverent, if not honest.

No person deserves anybody else’s “respect” for being willing to sign up for gainful employment.

“I served” is quickly replacing “trust me I’m a Christian” as a red flag.

I don't trust MSM. Trying to find what his exact quotes were on his service & can't find it. It's all buried under MSM stories saying he lied. Hearsy.

There are ways to be "irreverent" that can be effective, spot-on ... even necessary. I'm with you in a general sense.

But Don T. is so full of himself he doesn't understand some of the subtleties of verbal communication. He made so many loony comments during his time in office that millions of folks who otherwise would have supported him finally gave up and refrained from voting for him in 2020.

And this flawed Christian agrees with you fully about the “trust me I’m a Christian” theme.

John McCain chose sticking it to Trump over what's best for the American people.

Period.

Wise advice from your old man.

My former boss is an atheist and one of the most moral and decent folks I've ever met. This Christian gave him full props.

Can' say that I agree one bit.

Your description of Trump (which I agree with) essentially says that people like what he does as President, but they wish he'd 'put a sock in' many of his personal comments and snide remarks. Okay.... I'm with that... but what is the agenda there?? To put substance over style? To do what is right even if it means accepting it being delivered in a **** box? That's pretty much what I saw. Sure, I'd have greatly preferred that Trump have engaged in most ALL of the policies he espoused, but without the BS... but that wasn't an option and still isn't one today. Besides... large swaths of the nation are sick of the guy who pisses in your boots and tells you its raining as opposed to the guy who waters your plants while saying your yard looks like crap and you need to get off your ass and weed eat.

Which brings us to Pelosi. I don't support almost ANYTHING she supports, but more importantly, I don't like the way she and her ilk lie to the people.... Naming a bill that doesn't in ANY way even PRETEND to reduce inflation, the 'Inflation Reduction Act'... or blaming meat packers and oil companies and everyone in sight for the very predictable (by the CBO) results of their actions...

So even if you support her policies, what you're REALLY supporting is what you're being lied to about.

I'd rather have someone without a filter than someone who can't speak the truth about their policies.

Not remotely the same to me

The pedantic side of me would change "their policies" to "his/her policies," but otherwise agree 110%.

Your approach is sound in that you acknowledge it is important to differentiate between the good a president might do with policies and personnel picks as opposed to how heinous/nasty the person might be.

I actually liked some of the things Don T. did (standing up to China and robustly funding our military, for examples). But when he acted like a childish bozo, I would call him out to my conservative friends. Some would take umbrage at that because they are Donnie apologists. But their pushback was/is modest because they know I will criticize progressive politicians as forcefully, if not more so, than Don T. and (as another example) a woman known for her vulgarity and hate-filledness: M.T. Greene.

I don't blame the refs when my teams lose and, likewise, I don't make excuses when a politician does something absurd or harmful — even if I share many of the same views of that politician.

This great nation is home to way too many hypocrites and excuse makers — on both the left and the right.
