Taking what the defense gives you is currently a popular football coaching approach.

I hate it.

Football is inherently about imposing your will on the other team. That's what the game is all about.

When you call plays based on what the other team is doing, you are letting them impose their will on you. You are eating scraps instead of fixing dinner.

It is what it is. I just don't care for it.

My biggest complaint is CRS's seeming insistence to use the run to open the pass. It hasn't worked. So let's try using the pass to open the run. If that is what Cramsey is saying, great - it will be a change in what we've seen over 2+ years.

I think they call a play when they see what the defense is showing. He explains it in that presser.

In the old days you called a play in the huddle and hoped for the best.

^THIS^ 100%-----and another way to look at it is this----taking what the defense gives you ---is doing exactly what the defense wants you to do------the opposing coach says hey --- --lets entice them to run the ball---because if they keep passing we are doomed --or visa versa

RE: For all you guys and gals complaining about too much running in the 3rd Quarter
Total offensive plays in the 3rd quarter:
5 passes, 2 complete for 19 yards, 2 incomplete, 1 pass interference for 9 yards
14 rushes for 67 yards (4.8 avg yards per carry) but doesn't included the 2 sacks for
-13
1 punt

Breakdown by down:
1st down: 7 rushes (44 yards), 2 passes (1-2, 8 yards)
2nd down: 3 rushes (16 yards), 3 passes (1-2 11) yards with 1 pass interference, 1 sack
3rd down: 2 runs (3 yards), 1 sack
4th down: 2 runs (4 yards), 1 punt

So on 9 first down plays we passed twice and ran 7 times. Probably got a little predictable but we gained 5 yards or more on every carry except for 1.

I agree that we need to get the running game going. I just want a bigger lead before we try it.

Is it really "taking what the defense gives you" if the defense is stopping you?

Good gosh.. at 4.8 yards per carry, they didn't! Y'all stop trying to find problems where there's not any.

And no TD. I feel pretty confident any defensive coach in America would gladly give up 4.8 YPC and no points...

Cramsey is a thoughtful and knowledgeable coordinator. He is not afraid to get aggressive in the pass game, and he is being successful doing it. My biggest question for him is why the offense isn't more balanced. So far there have been twice as many run plays as there have been pass play. IMO a more balanced attack would result in a better run game. Oops never mind, just checked and as of three games Tigers have a very balanced attack with 98 rushes and 93 passes.

Again, all of that work paid off on the FIRST PLAY OF THE 4th QUARTER...

That was a 51 yard pass play, so that is a pretty large stretch...

Regardless, at that rate that would put our offense at 14 ppg, again, there is not a defensive coordinator in the country that would be thrilled with only giving up 14 points.

Take the one chunk run out and it’s 2.2 yards per

Well, I'm stupid, and y'all are right of course, but I would say that spending so much time on the ground in the third quarter did have an effect on their front four. We could run the ball pretty easily in the 4th quarter.

We won because we had the best player on the field. He made the play of the game on 4th down. And it wasn’t on a run.

That is such a one-dimensional understanding of the game.

This sentence reminds me of a response from the Late Great Rex Dockery to a sports reporter asking why he didn't do something different on a situation and that the reporter though that so and so was a better idea.

"That's why you're a sports reporter and I'm a head coach."
