Cool design--reminds me of FC Cincinnati's new digs in some ways.
Increasingly, we're seeing evidence that bigger is no longer better when it comes to college football stadia. The dozen or so universities at or near 100K capacity are exceptions to the rule and will continue to fill those venues. I commented here the other day that Indiana football would be well served by a smaller stadium where it fills up for most games and fans energize the team in a less cavernous environment.
I have no plans to give up my seats and miss out on the Nippert experience. But TV coverage today is so excellent and when the rain and snow blow across the stands my recliner is mighty appealing.

Much needed. I'm sure the Big Ten is happy about this too

But their current stadium is so nice.

I love that they mention the stadium requires no taxpayer funding...they're a friggin private institution, of course it wouldn't (and shouldn't)!

Our $87M upgrade now seems inexpensive.
Not that a new stadium was ever an option, but if it takes that kind of money for a new stadium, we are stuck with Nippert for eternity - which I think is a good thing.

Minnesota’s is 50,850 and Maryland is 51,802. Indiana’s Memorial Stadium is 52,626 which is a tad bigger but not much more so.

The artist's renderings doesn't look like a 35,000 capacity stadium. It's triple-decked around the 7/8's of the field... Looks more like a 65-70k stadium to me.
Or perhaps the scaling is way off. Either way, something doesn't match.

It looks exactly like a 35,000 seat stadium. Take a look at many of the new 25K - 30K MLS stadiums. Most have multiple decks - heck, my season tickets for Portland are in the 4th deck of a stadium that only holds 26K.

As someone who's been frequenting Nippert for decades I've always believed less is more but that was only partially true until recently. TV drives the bus and smaller more compact stadiums show much better on TV. You reference MLS and it's part of the reason that they require soccer specific stadiums. Look at the MLS teams that play in NFL stadiums; even Atlanta who draws really well still doesn't get the showing on TV that a well attended game at TQL.
I'd say about 5 years ago it flipped and people realized in the TV age that you need luxury experiences to drive revenue, not packing in fans by painting the seat numbers closer together. The big boys won't downsize because of the tradition of the sport but if they were starting from scratch their stadiums would be similar in size and amenities to NFL stadiums.

Must have decided they need 35k for when OSU visits.

If stadium size was important Temple, UNLV, UTSA, Memphis and USF would be called up to the P5. I agree with RealDeal that a full stadium shows better on television. I’ve heard Bohn and Cunningham say likewise so something tells me the networks have expressed this sentiment.

Per wiki:
IU 52,626
MN 52,525
But MD is smaller at 51,802

Wiki on the Big 10 info says 52,525
We need the WH fact checkers to intervene.

Lived in the apartment building literally right across the street from Ryan while I was doing some post-grad work at NU. I always liked that stadium, probably because of how much I liked Nippert and how few classical stadiums like that are still around.
