On the verge of coming back from an improbable 8-point deficit in the 4th quarter vs South Alabama, UCLA decides to play for the field goal, calling 9 consecutive running plays from USA's 24 yard-line down to the 6 in the final 2 minutes.

And it worked!

Nicholas Barr-Mira kicked a 24-yard game-winning FG as time expired. Bruins win, 32-31.

RE: Other games, Sept. 17
After exchanging four punts in the last half of the 4th quarter (two by each team), Cal found itself down to Notre Dame 24-17 in South Bend with about a minute to go in the game.

Cal's QB Plummer promptly throws an INT! But a split second before the catch, an Irish defender clocks the intended receiver in the head. Targeting! It's Cal's ball 15 yards closer to its needed tying TD.

A few plays later, Plummer is sacked ... and on his way down, the ball comes out and is run back for a game-clinching Notre Dame scoop and score!

Not so fast, Leprechauns!

Video review showed Plummer's right knee was down a split second before the ball left his hand. With the 10-second runoff, Cal has one last chance from the Irish 35 with 5 ticks left.

Plummer dances a bit to avoid the rush ... them heaves a Hail Mary pass under the watchful eyes of Touchdown Jesus. The ball hits the hands of a Notre Dame DB in the end zone and bounces up. When it comes down, the ball is knocked again by an Irish player ... then as its heading to the grass, the ball lands into the hands of a Cal receiver who's flat on his back in the end zone with several DBs starting to fall into a heap on top of him. But he bobbles away the difficult catch!! Notre Dame wins.

(Rice lost a game my freshman year (1966) when a similarly desperate Pachinko pass was caught by our opposing team's receiver who was flat on his back in the end zone.)

UNT ran its first kickoff reception back for a 99-yard TD to tie its game at UNLV, 7-7, early in the first quarter. But the Eagles were outscored 35-7 in the second half and lost in Sin City, 58-27.

Tulane completed the AAC weekend sweep of KState (after our volleyball team beat them last night). Tulane stopped 4 of 5 KSU fourth down conversion attempts, and even more remarkably opted to go for a game-clinching QB sneak on 4th and inches from their own 25, rather than punt it away with 2 minutes left.

Fights on the sidelines but not coat controversy like with Major and Ed Oliver. UH fans demanding a coaching change but it’s Tilman’s money…Tilman’s choice.

Tied at halftime.

Also have MO State (FCS) leading Arkansas in the 4th. (possible Petrino's revenge)
LA Tech down 13-6 at Clemson (halftime)

Earlier today:

Southern Illinois (FCS) beating Northwestern (P5) 31-24 (really, Pat Fitzgerald? can his seat get hot?)
Western Kentucky lost to Indiana in OT (33-30)

I never like our opponent to lose the week before we play them. It makes me think they are "really" going to bring it against us the next week. Instead maybe I should think if they are not good enough to beat KU then they are not good enough to beat us.
