This Week's Uniforms
As great as last week's uniforms were, since the athletic department is honoring Rice's first black athletes, this week's helmets will recognize Stahle Vincent, Rodrigo Barnes and Mike Tyler (RIP) with their numbers on the helmets...I've seen the helmets briefly and they are really pretty great...
Channel 13 in Houston will be airing a story on the helmets and athletes today at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. It's probably worth watching.

Yes, there was a dinner honoring them, as well as a number of other early african-american athletes, tonight at The ION, and they addressed the team at practice yesterday.

This commemoration is quite cool, but as a general principle, the fact there is such a notion as "this week's uniforms" is disappointing.

What MLB team has had the fewest uniform changes? Probably New York Yankees.
What MLB team has won the most pennants/World Series? New York Yankees.
What National League teams have had the fewest uniform changes? Probably Dodgers and Cardinals.
What National League teams have won the most pennants/World Series? Dodgers adn Cardinals.
Look at NCAA football. How often have Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, Oklahoma, and Southern Cal changed uniforms?
Pick a good look and stay with it.

Spot on. Rice needs to reinforce its primary brand. I'm sick of all the uniforms. They suck. Slap that OE 'R' on the blue helmet and be done with it.

Agreed, but the problem is that we have not picked a good or distinctive look- quite the opposite. Bring on the alts!

Seriously is old man syndrome...for kids today, this is a huge recruiting tool that the sporting goods companies are helping fund. You can still establish a brand and have 3-5 alternate uniforms a year. If this is the most we can do to drive excitement around the program at this time, do it and do it often. We've gotten a lot of great publicity out of these 2 uniforms so far.

Which is why Bama and Georgia and OU and Ohio State can't recruit?

Agreed. I love these gimmicky uniforms personally and they work great to get Rice some attention when we're going up against opponents that fans arent very interested in. Almost cancelled plans so I could see those space unis in person even though we were playing McNeese. We're not Bama so why pretend to be? Let's have some fun and enjoy what we can

It's laughable to even compare our recruiting with Bama, Georgia and OSU. They have everything we don't and more. They will be able to recruit regardless of what comes from other teams.
Look, uniforms aren't everything, but they do have some minor impact on recruiting and attracting fans. Bringing some excitement to a program that is generally not very exciting is worthwhile. Nothing wrong with that.
If we ever get to a status of a Bama, Georgia, OU, OSU, or UT, I'll be happy to revert to a single brand with no flashy changes.

RE: This Week's Uniforms
While last week’s unis looked nice in the close up photos and pre-game media, from the stands they looked like all white unis with blue lettering and silver helmets with a non-descript “Rice” on one side of the helmet, i.e., nothing special. From a distance, 1st row of the chairbacks on the west side, all the “special touches” were washed iut in the sea of white. Not a bad look, but no one around me was oohing and aahing over the unis. At least last week, the play on the field was what had folks talking.

The value of the alternate uniforms is in the build up to game time. If you watch any of the social media, they've been talking about our uniforms for the past two weeks constantly. Lots of build-up to game day and constant tweeting with lots of retweets and comments.
Game day, it's all about the product on the field and the outcome of the game.

Love the uni look! Shows well on television. And actually features blue and gray!
