All a part of the plan to lull Creighton into a false sense of superiority.

Nice win. It seems like a few years back, we'd struggle to win matches when they went to 5 games, but our record in those marathon matches seem to be way better the past few years.

A win Sunday and we'll be ranked. A loss and we probably won't be.

Rice Fight Never Dies.

Completely outplayed by K-state, down two sets and trailing 0-3 in the third, and they just refused to lose. Good teams find ways to win.

UCF looked really good tonight.

“Technically” with KU losing they “should” drop from 23 to make room for Rice to move up as “virtual” #25

Won’t mean a thing of course unless we win again on Sunday.

Texas Tech got beat by a really bad Oral Roberts team.

Rice handed K-State that first set with 15 errors. Offense was truly offensive over the first two sets.

Courtley had her worst match since the opening weekend in Oregon. Not herself as she passed up kill opportunity after kill opportunity only to throw a weak tap over the net. Lacked her usual confidence and aggressiveness.

The frustrating thing is the majority are not tips aiming for open floor, but rather just weak taps over the net. For the life of me I don't get it. It's like playing rope-a-dope, allowing the opposing team to constantly be on the offensive.

I meant to point out from last night that UH had a couple of tip kills against UT (and a couple more that ended up being free balls)

I like the strategy if it’s executed well, and more judiciously than Rice has been doing it this season.

There's a difference between tip kills and simply weakly tapping the ball over the net with no intent of finding open floor space...and in many of those opportunities we were well positioned for the kill shot.

She was getting blocked a lot. K State’s blocking in general went down as the match went on and Rice’s back row defense improved.

That's the way I saw it. Really badly outplayed by K-State for most of the match. K-State, like Texas Tech, didn't really have a weakness, and was a VERY good serving and blocking team. They out-blocked us 26-14, and it was only that close thanks to Bichelmeyer and Adekunle combining for 5 blocks in the 5th set. If we had last year's back line K-State would had double digit aces. Their serve was that good.

To state the obvious, our offense is still out of sync, and I don't see any adjustments being made by Genny. We won this on Nia's and Izzy's serving, and Anota taking charge-- and not being denied-- in the final set. She ended up with 15 kills, 3 errors, .522, 6 blocks). Bichelmeyer had a solid match (12 kills, 3 errors, .273, 3 blocks, 8 digs). Maruska was Maruska-- frustratingly inefficient on offense (13 kills, 6 errors, .179), but she once again contributed to our backline defense. Carly was also back in form. Off nights for Courtley and Harris.

This team epitomizes RFND. We are now 3-1 in 5-set matches-- all against P5 programs, and in that one loss at ranked Oregon, we were badly outplayed but somehow had Oregon tied 9-9 in the fifth set.

As others have noted, though the service defense was excellent tonight, the back line defense had a sub-par game for them against K-State's offense. Far too many uncontested kills.

Creighton is a senior-laden and very tall team. We're going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight if we're going to compete against them. The good news is we pulled this one against a quality team despite playing a rather lackluster match.

Onward and upward.

UCF looked like top 25 quality tonight. I saw them earlier in the season and they looked more like Rice at our worst.

Last week —

Others receiving votes and listed on two or more ballots: Rice 73; Towson 51; UCLA 44; Utah 40; Mississippi State 33; UCF 26; Miami (FL) 15; UNLV 15; Washington State 13; Colorado 10; Northwestern 9; Michigan 7; Southern California 7; Houston 6

Genny's post-game reaction...

Quote:"I don't think anything flipped for us, it just took us too long to play our game. Defensively we were out of whack and they were out-defending us. We were not very disciplined and we were not very happy with the way we were playing. I could sense that our defense was kind of affecting our offense. After two sets of it, our team was able to finally start executing at a high level, especially out of the middle with Anota. We started serving a little better where we had been struggling. We just have to clean those areas up. I thought they (Kansas State) did a good job of attacking us but once we did a better job of putting up a better block that helped us. We started making little adjustments along the way and Izzy Rawlings gave us a boost with her serves. It was a total team effort and we showed some composure. We'll have to come out on the attack more next time, especially against Creighton."

One of Creighton’s players has a ridiculous number of attacks. In last weeks’ 5 setters she had 63, 93, and 58 attacks.

Wow, the FSU 5-setter Creighton and 4 different players with 20+ digs (two with 30+).

So what those two stats are implying to me is that despite the huge number of attacks that a lot of them are not kills resulting in some long rallies and racking up the attack/dig numbers.

If that’s true then we’ll just need to be relentless and play our stellar brand of defense.

And buckle up for a whole lot of volleyball!

The Creighton squad is staying at our hotel. They are a really tall team. If both Tech and K-State were both able to have their way at the net against us-- and more than double us up in number of blocks, I'm concerned what Creighton may do to us. Should be interesting to see how K-State does against them. Based only on a review of their stat page, it would appear that Creighton's strength is their overall defense (upfront blocking and back line defense). They are not particularly efficient on offense, hitting .234 on the year.

Well maybe all the tipping practice the Owls have had will pay off? Creighton can still only put 6 on the floor at a time, so there will be holes. Owls just need to find the.
