Plane came in much hotter than I was expecting and stopped on a dime. Ridiculous

A carrier landing is a controlled crash.

Cool to know. Did the pilot come in further down that carrier than normal?

Seems to me he could have landed a little sooner as he seemed about halfway if not more down the runway when he landed but I have zilch experience and obviously do not know the design intent of the plane for such a landing.

Looked about normal.

My uncle had his hook shot off over the northern Atlantic somewhere. Landed, flew down the deck and straight into the North Sea. Somehow they didn’t run him over and they were able to pluck him out.

He was flying 2 days later apparently.

The plane is provided a controlled stop by the ship via the arresting gear cable (stretched out across the initial landing area of the flight deck) and associated equipment. The tension for the arresting gear cable is set electronically based upon the type of plane coming in for a landing - kind of like setting the drag on a fishing reel. You want it tight enough to provide adequate resistance to stop the plane, but not tight enough that it pops the cable. It's the pilot's job to touch down onto the flight deck such that his tail hook will latch onto the arresting gear cable. The cable spools out after the plane has engaged it and slows the rate of speed down the flight deck of the plane till it has stopped the plane.

I assume thats normal take off procedure, but its interesting that his hand is not on the stick until the aircraft has actually left the carrier deck. Before that, he's using it to brace against a cockpit support handle during the launch. His move to the control stick is a single quick fluid motion just as the plane lurches off the deck.
