Rice has moved up two spots from No. 17 in 2021 to No. 15 - tied with WashU.

Rankings

Big headline is Columbia moved from No. 2 to No. 18. They were accused of fudging data and have admitted to the accusations.

Columbia Drop

We should be able to jump Vanderbilt and Brown. Wonder if the new President has made any mention of prioritizing the rankings. Spare me the lecture on rankings.

RE: USNews 2022-2023 College Rankings
The most direct way for Rice to move up in the rankings would be to get a med school. Following the methodology used for the USN&WR rankings as closely as I could, several years ago I figured that a Rice/Baylor Med combo would rank somewhere around #6. The reason was the large amount of research that a med school generates, and the correlation of research and reputation. When that deal fell through, I figured that a startup Rice medical school would still have moved Rice up several spots, more as that school got established.

A law school would not help as much as a med school, at least not directly, but the potential for a law school to work with the Jones School and Baker Center on some high-visibility joint projects would definitely add to the reputation piece.

The one area pushed by opponents of athletics--the impact of athletes on entering SAT scores--would have minimal to no effect on the USN&WR methodology.

I think Leebron was hired to improve Rice's USN&WR ranking, and he decided that the best way to do it was to add a med school, so he went after Baylor Med. When that fell through, I think he should have pushed for a start-up Rice Med. With Baylor Med close to an open revolt by docs who did not like the risk being taken by starting their own hospital (the same risk that Rice did not want to take on, and the hospital was eventually sold to the VA while still under construction), there would have been a huge opportunity to partner with Methodist and raid a bunch of docs from Baylor Med. Raiding faculty is a Rice tradition, going back to Lovett and Princeton.

Not pursuing a start-up Rice Med when the Baylor Med deal fell through, and getting rid of KTRU, are two decisions that clearly lessened my evaluation of David Leebron as president. I became less involved with Rice at about that time, so I am really not as knowledgeable about what he has done sense.

Sixth for Best Value. I'm more concerned about that. That's what brought me to Rice. Dropped one spot, but can't complain about sixth.

Yeah, I don't know much (read nothing) about the details, but I was rooting for this to happen.

Anything less than first for best value is not acceptable.

Here’s a value proposition—
Maybe we should offer a “take five classes get the sixth one free” offer.

*Actually we had that back in my day. (Probably still do I’d guess)

I would be disappointed if he has.

Seem I paid a set fee per semester which allowed you to take all the classes you wanted, or more accurately, all you could handle, as long as you were fulfilling your major and distribution requirements. Friends who attended UT and TAMU talked about paying per semester hour which I remember being a foreign concept at Rice.

Surprise Harvard is still ranked so high since they spend so much energy on gender identity, woke, etc.

Kinda like Golden Corral, but (I’m told these days) with even better food!
