RE: USN&WR Rankings
Their description of UC is quite complimentary. Not sure if this is something they got from us? Not perfectly written, and left off Travis Kelce for outstanding athletic alumni.

RE: USN&WR Rankings
The push to 60,000 students and UC's expansion across the Cincinnati region will continue to incentivize the state to consider the potential of UC as another flagship. Ohio is too big of a state to throw all of it into a single university that, to be frank, isn't really even elite in many regards.

You did the same thing others do-

It is NOT Ohio State Legislators
It IS State of Ohio Legislators

It is not Ohio State medical board- it’s the state of Ohio medical board

At least in my mind.

All these things that call themselves Ohio State xyz links them to Ohio State University. So annoying

Your point is well taken.

But I'll add that state legislators have regularly enjoyed the V.I.P. treatment at the Horseshoe for decades. That's not to say UC doesn't invite state/federal elected officials for games too because most major public universities do through their government relations function. But more legislators were probably clamoring for tickets for the Michigan or Penn State games than for seeing a visit to the Queen City by Tulsa or Temple.

Being five miles from the Statehouse though affords OSU a unique opportunity. On the plus side, the last time I saw the numbers, UC was getting more funding than all the rest of the state universities by a considerable margin but still remained well behind OSU. Some of that is for programmatic differences--agricultural school, dentistry, optometry and other programs UC doesn't offer. But there is no doubt some of it was birthed and is perpetuated by being the flagship: The Ohio $tate University.

UC has come a long way and the future is promising as Ohio's other major research engine in the state system. Soaring enrollment figures and the profile of Big 12 sports both assure a bright future and greater national visibility than ever before. I hope there is a vision and a plan to increase selectivity and continue to improve the academic reputation. It can't be done in a day, but it needs to be underway now.

Interesting article on the whole system.

Opinion: What Columbia's college ranking debacle reveals
Opinion by David M. Perry
Updated 5:51 PM ET, Wed September 14, 2022

(CNN)According to folklore (and the legendary author Neil Gaiman), the con man and riverboat gambler Canada Bill Jones was playing cards in Cairo, Illinois, one day, when a buddy came up to him and pulled him aside to say, "Don't you know this game is crooked?" Canada Bill replied, "I know it's crooked, but it's the only game in town."

That's how I felt when news broke that Columbia University acknowledged it had been submitting inaccurate data to US News and World Report for their annual college rankings. This revelation was brought to light by a math professor at the university, who found discrepancies between the data Columbia submitted for the ranking and reality. Since he made these discrepancies public, Columbia's ranking has dropped from #2 to #18.

Everyone in higher education knows that these rankings don't really measure true quality, that cheating is rampant among many different schools, and that even schools that report accurate data still try to game the ranking system.
