RE: 2022-23 Football Coaching Carousel
The Athletic did a re-grade of the coaches hired in the 2017-2018 cycle. 21 coaches were hired and only six remain in that same position. For comparison, Jimbo Fisher and Dana Dimel both got Bs.

Rice's excerpt is below

https://theathletic.com/3675890/2022/10/...st-fisher/

Rice
Out: David Bailiff
In: Mike Bloomgren

Original grades:

ESPN: B
CBS: A-
Athlon: C
SI: 4 out of 5
Regrade: C

Bloomgren was hired to bring the Stanford mindset to the Owls. Rice, like Bloomgren’s previous home, is a prestigious school academically that would try to win games in the trenches with a power running game. It hasn’t gone particularly well, but the school has shown patience, and Rice may be in the process of turning a corner. Bloomgren was 11-31 through his first four seasons, but the Owls have started the 2022 season with a 3-2 record, including wins against Louisiana and UAB. This is likely a make-or-break year.

Well, it's been a struggle without Bloomgren.

That idea doesn't seem to met with a ton of resistance on the Stanford boards

" I also think that if we're being realistic our old friend Bloomgren would surely get a close look, though Brennan and Taylor (and Lance Taylor if we want to keep it in the Shaw family) are more attractive to me."

" If Bloomgren can get Rice looking good . . . and think back to the rapid change of direction under Harbaugh."

"Surprised our old friend Mike Blomgren’s name hasn’t arisen yet. The heart and soul of this program during its highs has started with great line play. Blomgren was not only our best OC but the O line coach who developed those guys. Now he’s got Rice (Rice!) looking far better than they have at any time in my memory. If he can get to a winning season there this year and Shaw were to step away, I'd keep my eyes on him. He also understands all the pluses and minuses, the idiosyncrasies of the institution in a way only a few other potential candidates (Mase comes to mind) could."

Georgia Tech Names J Batt New Director of Athletics

That only increases the chances of Alabama OC Bill O'Brien going to Georgia Tech, in addition to the fact that BOB was an assistant at Georgia Tech for seven years in the 90s/00s.

Bama is about my #3 or #4 team. That being the case, I will not be sad to see BO'B go. I've never been highly impressed with his play calling, and I thought he did a horrible job on the last possession in Knoxville Saturday night.

RE: 2022-23 Football Coaching Carousel
Not so much "carousel" but two members of Rice's 2018 class are part of two of the biggest surprises in CFB this year.

Aston Walter is on the staff at Tennessee as an offensive GA. He works with the RBs and WRs. Jerry Mack stole him from Vanderbilt after one year there.

Preston Gordon is on the staff at Illinois as an defensive GA, working with the DL. Not exactly sure how he got onboard there.

A bit older (class of 2015), but still from the late Bailiff era, Jaylon Finner is on the staff of the Bills. He played with Corey Frazier (Leslie Frazier's son-now DC of Bills) at Rice.

Closer to Rice, Ty Carter (class of 2017) is now the OL coach at Katy High.

Walter, Gordon, Finner, and Carter would be four good names to keep in mind when the next Rice football coach is filling out his staff.

In a mildly related note (maybe not really) Luke Willson has started appearing regularly on the Canadian ESPN. I’m wondering if he’ll have a full time commentator gig in the near future.

Also, Charlotte fired head coach Will Healy after the '9ers dropped to 1-7 following a loss to FIU on Saturday. They now will have had three Head Coaches since 2013, but none have had a winning record at the school since a decade ago. Brad Lambert went 22-48 (.314) from 2013-18, and Will Healy was fired with just a 14-19 (.424) overall record, which was an improvement over their previous coach, but just not good enough.

Liberty Extends Hugh Freeze Contract Through 2026

"With his Flames a 2-point try away from an 8-0 start, Liberty moves to lock up Freeze ahead of college football's coaching carousel season: Freeze and Liberty have agreed on a new contract covering eight seasons and averaging nearly $5 million per year."

Guess that means Owls will lock up Bloom before someone else snaps him up, you know, with him being historically 'successful' this season and 'turning things around at Rice' and all...

A&M would pay that to Fisher if they fired him in five years

They are hitting the Whorns level of buyouts.

I saw where the Brown -> Strong -> Herman -> Sarkisan has cost UT about 55 million dollars in buyouts of old coaches, buyouts in incoming coaches' previous schools, buyouts of assistants headed out, buyouts of new slates of assistants coming in, and bumps in salaries for new assistants.

They burned 24 million total on the Herman exits alone.....
