I have a ton of great memories of JMU, but that ranks up there with one of the worst. I still remember it like it happened yesterday. I remember being so happy as we were going to take down App State in their house and then seeing the fumble, App jump on the ball and hearing the home side erupt was rough.
Other memories of that day:
-Eating in the Duke Club tent and a handful of App State fans walked right through the middle.
-The App State fan that was trash talking us as we were walking back to our car as if they blew us out.

Despite all that, I still have respect for App State and their fans. The majority of them are pretty decent and they have every right to be confident.
I look forward to playing them yearly. It's going to be fun.
That being said, I don't think we beat them in Boone this year. I am hoping we can keep it close. It's our first away game this year and will be quite a test.
Just really hoping we don't get blown out. If we somehow manage to beat them this year.... my expectations for this team skyrocket into the stratosphere.
While I may have low expectations, I do expect our team is going to Boone expecting to win.
Not sure there would be a bigger statement than to upset App State in their house in our first FBS season.

JMU just had a shout-out on Full Ride ESPNU radio, right after the Karl Benson interview.

The 2008 game is still the greatest game I have ever attended in person. Thought the endzone bleachers were going to come down at one point

I also agree that the 2008 home game vs Ap State was the greatest football game I have seen. Particularly after being in the stands at Boone in 2007 and watching the fumble!!

Definitely. I had driven down from DC for that game, and at halftime I said to my girlfriend "well, we get the ball first in the second half. If they don't do anything with that possession, we can go home." What a delightful comeback. The 2008 UR (Scotty) game was a blast, but the ASU comeback was much more of a "we are for real" moment.

heh.

Another great one in 2008 besides the Ap State and Richmond games was Landers Hail Mary in the rain and wind at Villanova that was tipped and fell into Bosco Williams hands. 2008 was such a magical season, too bad it ended vs Montana.

Yep it's a shame we didn't win it all after all that. Those App and Richmond games are two of my all time best games I've attended in all sports. Really felt like that team was destined to win it all.

Same. I have yet to experience a game quite that good. The atmosphere was unlike any other game I have ever attended. There was just a magic in the air.
I am so hoping to experience another game with that much energy. It was truly special and something to strive to replicate.
I have yet to experience that feeling in the new Bridgeforth but perhaps Marshall might be the closest we have gotten to a game of that magnitude.

App has shown all their cards against UNC and Tex A&M

I am sure Cignetti has been very vanilla and has shown very little.

Coach knew the schedule. Cig was confident in this team and knew he didnt need everything against MTSU & Norfolk. He wont tell the players this, but he has probably been game planning for this all off season. I am sure we have a bunch of packages and looks that App will not have seen.

In the Norfolk State game, they put in a flea flicker. That definitely wasn't vanilla and it wasn't necessary either. But, it's on tape and App is going to have to prepare for it.
I think JMU has shown some things they can do, but I believe it was done purposefully so other teams would have to be ready for it.
I do believe the JMU offense has a lot up their sleeves. It won't be easy for any defense to prepare for us.

Absolutely. We didn’t add wrinkles for the Spartans. It was for App & Marshall.

Yes still painful. Jamal made it back to us in 2010 when he went 77 yards down the sideline in Blacksburg to get us started at VT.

My biggest fear is you can't scheme for bad technique/play, our DBs need to put in ALOT of work the next 2 weeks or we are getting torched.

I can assure you, they have not. If anything, they have shown that they can they can play ball control or they can play wide open.

RE: PRE GAME THREAD: Appalachian State - 3:30 kickoff
This is the first game I think JMU misses Mike Greene. He was the best DT I’ve ever seen at JMU and one of the best I’ve seen in college football. He demanded a double team every single play and still made boatloads of plays in the backfield. That made the offense decode which DE they were going to double with a TE and OT, then leave the other DE 1 on 1. He was a huge reason that JMU has had stud DE pass rushing numbers over the last 5 years.

With all due respect to Carpenter, Edwards, Kromah, & Funk , they aren’t Mike Greene.
App State has the best power running team in the Sun Belt…if JMU can stop them on the ground then this program is way far ahead of the curve in FBS transition.

Personally, I would love for App to get pass happy and have plenty of drive ending incompletions, sacks, picks etc. Brice threw 25 INT’s one year at Duke. It is in his DNA

The way that Cignetti talks about Carpenter and watching the guy in action the past season and change, that dude is the real deal at nose, I don’t think we should discount how this DL fares against App St.’s rushing attack. I’d like one more data point before App but with the way MTSU was constantly doubling him, I think our DL will be fine. Ukwu looks great, Kromah and Abi have had their moments too. Plus I like our LBs.

The key is forcing then avoiding turnovers, this seems to have the form of our games against NDSU, the team who plays the cleanest football wins with a small margin. Both us and App possess the personnel to put up points but prefer to play the ball control game instead.

24-21 slugfest either way with the winner forcing the extra turnover or avoiding a big penalty.

Cignetti doesn't go out of his way to talk about a player unless he's special, and Cignetti seems to always go out of his way to talk about Carpenter and how great he is.
Thankfully when it comes to turnovers the offense has been pretty good so far. The only fumble I remember was from Palmer in the first game and was recovered by the Oline.
Centeio played really well on Saturday and seemed to make all the right decisions.
I do have a little concern about having a bye so soon, but perhaps it will give the team the opportunity to fix any mistakes.
CB Austin apparently has seen more snaps than any other CB so far. I think that's a good sign for a young secondary and looks like he's stepping up to be a key defender.
