Similar but different. GVSU is D2, still provides scholarships for athletics, etc. D3 is a whole different animal, but they did follow a similar trajectory once reaching FBS.

You hear that?...That's the sound of Matt Campbell's agent getting himself a huge commission...

He's the same agent that reps CLF and almost all of the SEC coaches. That guy drives up market prices more than realtors with commission breath and alimony payments.

It's a very good feeling to read stories about coaching vacancies and not have your coach being the #1 candidate to fill a vacancy. I guess not interviewing for any of the vacancies last year has convinced the sports writers that our coach is content to stay here for the time being.

Cryst is owed 16.4 million.

With their new media deals paying $85-100M a year, these eight digit buyouts are going to be less painful for B1G and SEC teams.

Another P5 school wasting their sports income. No wonder Cincinnati can compete despite the lesser income.

He accepted $11 million payable by February 1st. Might need to tighten the belt a bit.

According to athletic director Chris McIntosh, Chryst was due to receive paid 85% of the remaining value of his five-year contract after being fired Sunday.

That was $20,263,434.

“We agreed to $11 million,” McIntosh said Monday, “in one or two installments.”

McIntosh stressed the money will come from private funds in the UW Foundation.

“Everybody wants to be assured that they’re not taxpayer dollars,” McIntosh said. “They are drawn from the annual fund, which is contributed to through a combination of ways.

“But those are private dollars we are using.”

More: Success isn't guaranteed, but look for Jim Leonhard to take over as full-time coach if Wisconsin plays well the rest of the season.

More: Jim Leonhard is Wisconsin's new interim head football coach after Paul Chryst was fired. Here's what you should know about him.

The remaining value of Paul Chryst's five-year contract after being fired Sunday was $20,263,434.

UW officials last October gave Chryst a new contract which included a raise of about $900,000 and a total compensation package of $5.25 million per year.

McIntosh told reporters Sunday night he and Chryst had agreed to a buyout significantly less than was called for in the contract.

The agreement is obviously good for UW.

But why would Chryst agree to take less money? Chryst was not available Monday but he had, under the terms of his contract, a duty to mitigate in the buyout section.

In short, if Chryst took a Division I coaching job or a job in pro football during the term of the liquidated damages, UW officials could deduct money from the buyout.

That term now ends on Feb. 1.

Would Georgia Tech ever take a stab at the Kennesaw State coach with how well some of the FCS/D2/D3 winners are doing in FBS right now?

Does anyone have a theory for why Phillip Montgomery can produce some stingy Tulsa teams, but can't seem to get over the hump? Sometimes I think he's maxed their potential and would be a good hire for someone like Missouri.

Probably over-all talent level is a factor at Tulsa.

I think it's more likely that Monty can get his teams psyched to play certain schools well...and nasty...but is not consistent enough to get them playing on a high level overall. So they get "up" to play Cincinnati, but I'd be willing to be that they get blasted by Navy this week... And I do mean "blasted": they probably will make Navy look like they are QB'd by Roger Staubach this week.

It's not like he's a simply incompetent coach like Dave Wannstedt. Wanny consistently recruited high-level talent but never seemed to be able to get over the hump. Monty is just inconsistent...and I think undisciplined. His teams will be "up" and then lose "WTF" games the next couple of weeks. This results in 6-8 win seasons, with just enough "hope" against major programs to keep his job but also some head-shaking losses which always keeps his seat warm.

That's good insight on Tulsa. It explains why Tulsa can't ever seem to get a signature win (@ Ole Miss this season) yet gives CFP participant Cincy fits every time. And I agree with you, I think Navy upsets Tulsa this week in Annapolis; the loss to UC took a lot of starch out of their team. I can't imagine their QB is in prime condition either after the sackfest UC served up last weekend.

You think Wannstedt is an incompetent coach?

How did an incompetent be an NFL head coach for 11 years, with a winning record for 6 of them? How did he have a better record as an NFL head coach than Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, or Steve Spurrier?

He also had a better record at Pitt than any coach since the 1980s except Narduzzi, who he is almost tied with. And Narduzzi's record is inflated by Kenny Pickett.

He's no Belichick, but there's a lot of levels below Belichick before you get to "incompetent."

A little different opinion...I don't think Monty is that good of a coach and I'll wager many Tulsa fans agree. That said, some teams in your own conference will play you tough no matter what. It's part familiarity, it's part "little-brother" syndrome, it's part schematically, and it's part a conference game just means more than OOC. Temple also gave us fits until most recently. If you go around the different conference in college football there are similar examples of teams paying certain teams "tougher."

I would also add, and I posted this in another thread, Tulsa just seems to have an inferiority complex toward us. I guess because we've had more success than them, we have better facilities, better crowds, better talent, better coaching, better trajectory to the B12 and we represent the top of the conference. They pride themselves on playing solid dee and with "toughness." So, they want to bring that in our games as a way to hide their deficiencies in other areas. Just my two cents...

Temple went on a min-run of coaches who built up a "Temple Tough" (as they called) culture-- Al Golden, Steve Addazio, Matt Rhule and Geoff Collins. Rod Carey was a flat-out awful hire for them, he lost that culture and they became soft.

Tulsa just has the profile of the schools that hate us the most (think Xavier, UConn and several other Big East schools)-- we are an urban blue-collar type university program and they are a school full of upper middle class to wealthy students. FWIW, Tulsa also plays UCF extremely tough-- Montgomery is 4-0 of them and the Golden Hurricane has beaten the Knights 8 out of the last 9 they have played.

Interesting that two of those openings are occurring at four corners schools that may still be in play for Big 12 expansion. It would be interesting to know if their top candidates would prefer to coach in the new Big 12 or a depleted Pac 12.
