The Valley of the Sun trumps any of those locations with the possible exception of Raleigh.
One Rose Bowl since they joined the then Pac-8 in 1978. One. In 44 years. Utah made it to the Rose Bowl this past January and they just joined in 2011.
At least Arizona State hasn’t sunk as low as Colorado. At least not yet.
I think they have been to two Rose Bowls. One in 1986 and the other with Jake The Snake in 1996.

That is correct

My quick estimate of 5th in the PAC12 supports this.
Normally that's where I'd slot them.
But it sounds like there's a major NCAA investigation into ASU football right now. They basically ignored all recruiting blackout periods during COVID shutdowns in 2020, and staffers prepared detailed lists of the violations.
The fact that so much evidence has been collected means less wiggle room and higher sanctions than is normal for this type of violation.
That's why ASU had a massive roster exodus this offseason. 17 players transferred, and a lot of them were projected to be starters.
The lack of talent on their roster is one big strike. Add in the uncertainty about sanctions, and ASU might plummet to the least desirable job in the PAC for this hiring cycle.

Pros: They have a good recruiting base. They have a solid brand and history. They don’t have onerous academic restrictions.
Cons: They don’t have the resources of schools in the P2. Since they joined the PAC, they haven’t been a consistently ranked program.
They’re middling in terms of P5 coaching desire-ability.

Their opinion is that ASU is highly desirable.
I don't think it is that high up in the P5 pecking order.
Thoughts?
It’s a big state university in a metro area that is growing, likely would be ‘easy’ to recruit there. Young guys might be looking forward to roaming Mill Ave for four years.

Above Colorado, below Nebraska.
Than again, almost every P5 job in the country is above Colorado, a place coaches go to see their careers die.

They need a less abrasive version of Frank Kush. Tom Herman might be a good choice. Herman has a 54-22 record as a head coach with Houston and Texas. He grew up in Southern California, where he played his high school and college ball, and probably has some good connections from his many years of coaching in Texas. He might be able to recruit both areas.
ASU can get good power conference schools to play them in Tempe. Their future nonconference home schedule includes games with Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Texas A&M, LSU, Florida, and Texas. They will be okay if they get the right coach, stick with him and support him.

Unless it's your dream destination, it's not a career maker. How often are you on TV earlier than The Late Show? You will work in obscurity unless something bad happens and you get fired. A good place to transition into retirement. I'd say bottom third of the P5 at best.

I would rank being in the Phoenix metro a lot higher than several of those locales
Obviously you’ve never been to Starkville!

Bill Clark would be a good choice.

It’s a top job in the grand scheme of things.
It’s better than any D2 programs, FCS programs, and is a top 30 FBS program.
It’s one hell of a job, perhaps not an ultimate destination but a dream job none the less.

Ouch.
So much for a B10 invite anytime soon.

I would take ASU over Nebraska. At least I would have more access to recruits.
