Wilcke
Thoughts? I thought he looked really good today. No doubt in my mind that he is the future.

What y'all think about next week? Does he get the nod, or Keyes? What's the story with Lowe?

RE: Wilcke
He either starts or Keyes gets a really short leash.

0-2 doesn't leave a lot of room for loyalty or favors

RE: Wilcke
I figure against Northwestern State, Wilcke & Keyes each get a half if Keyes is healthy.

If yesterday can be trusted, Wilcke is the superior QB by a comfortable margin, but I just have a weird feeling that Hall is attached to Keyes and will be slow to demote him.

RE: Wilcke
I have no idea what Keyes' injury status is. If he's well, I agree that we may see both Wilcke and Keyes play a half. Though I don't know if the next game against Northwestern State will give a clear indication of how good the QBs are. I looked Northwestern up and they lost their first two games to Montana and Grambling- both scoring 47 points against them. Montana shut them out, and they scored 21 against Grambling.

I do feel like Trey Lowe got a raw deal in the Liberty game. He came in cold off the bench when Keyes was injured. There was 1:00 minute on the clock and USM had all 3 timeouts. And for his first play they have him throw a long bomb down the right sideline??!! As someone said last week, the pass really wasn't that bad a few feet short, but enough to be intercepted. Couldn't they have started him out with a few safer plays to get him in a groove, like a 10 yard pass to move the chains with a slant, curl or pass to the flat. Perhaps a draw play and call a time out if it doesn't get a first down. Just let him get adjusted. Instead they have him throw a low percentage long bomb that gets intercepted...and the optics are that he got benched because of it.

Wilcke looked good. Northwestern is a game he can hone in on his timing hopefully.

I'm not sure the extent of Keyes injuries but if he's healthy, I can see him taking reps, but after what I saw from Wilcke, I'm not sure we can go back to Keyes, maybe I'm wrong.

We have to get the ball to our talented WR's (and every pass to them doesn't have to be a Jump Ball situation)..if Wilcke is the only QB then so be it.

We also need to find a running attack with our "normal" offense...so far Gore and the other RB's are only successful in the Super Back..

I'll agree to disagree.. We get the pass game going then the running game can open up. Right now we're having a tough time with both.

RE: Wilcke
Wilcke should get the start. Sure, Keyes only saw a half before injury, but we all saw enough to know that Wilcke should be, and likely will be, the starting QB from here out. Keyes will still get some legit PT this week and against Tulane, but there should be some clear separation come conference time. Hall has given Keyes plenty of opportunity. He is also a great talent. However, Wilcke puts USM in the best position to win and Hall doesnt have time to play favorites. His favorite at this point is whomever can run a successful offense the best.

In its second game under Clay Helton, Georgia Southern scored 45 points at Nebraska, using a completely new offensive system installed over the spring and summer. Compare that to where we are 14 games into CWH’s career. It’s not panic time yet, but it is time for some serious WTF is he doing?

I'm not at that stage yet, but it's annoying to say the least that our sports always seem to be in a continuous rebuild, yet year after year you see first time coaches make huge strides elsewhere.

Are you saying Helton is a first time coach?
He is known as an offensive oriented coach and has produced high scoring offenses. I do agree though, it’s past time to see some tangible progress.

But did Helton do this with SWAC level recruits? That's where we were last season.. This season we're a bit better but still haven't made the turn yet.

Well, we sure seem to have lots of representation in the NFL if our 'cruitin' has been so pitiful. Don't see a lot of Marshall/Marshall/Marshall, App State or Ga Southern NFL'ers, but maybe I ain't looking right.04-cheers

Seems to me it's more disorganization, poor leadership, overrated ass't corches and attrition that's torn us apart the last decade (yeah, I know, Monkee had that one exciting year that was quickly "gone with the wind").

Does that mean we have been recruiting juggernauts? Of course not...but good enough not to get kilt by S. Alabama, Rice or UTEP for crying out loud!

Saw on FB Eaglepost that we had a strong chance of landing Stetson Bennett but Hopson didn't even offer him?

oh my if true.

Someone made a comment about how good of a coach Hop was and we'd be doing better if he was here instead of Hall..

That right there is enough to say that comment is silly. Hop knew the cupboard was bare when he quit after game 1.

We can say what we want about Hall, but he's in year 2 and has almost doubled the wins from last year.

The culture is changing.. Saturday was horrible, but if we don't have a repeat of that this year, get bowl eligible, and have a winning season, I'll be extremely optimistic about next season.

But we need to address QB. I guess the one note I can say is yes we went through 3 QBs on Saturday, but for once it was due to performance and not injury.

And none of them were pegged as the starter at the beginning of the year.

I hope he's recruiting high school, junior college and the transfer portal for a guy. We get a halfway competent QB and next year looks pretty good.

Agreed. I think Wilcke has potential but right now his level of play is spotty at best. There's glimpses, but I'd figure we'd start seeing more as he grew and not less.

I'm just not seeing the potential in Wilcke. Lange looks better to me. Wilcke doesn't seem to have much arm. Lowe seems better than either by a large step.

Wilke is an uber freshman. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a QB stare at one receiver more than he does. He even stares at them when a play fake is called. He’s got a lot of learning to do and his learning curve is a little slow at the moment…..but…..he is a true freshman.
