RE: Three Hall of Famerers
Consider the connections here. 2 athletes that played all their college football on the same team for 3 years and going undefeated. They both end up in the College Football Hall of Fame. And in 1971 - the final year of the streak, the final home game of the year, win #34 in the streak by a 41-6 score was also the first Toledo game I ever attended. It was also the first year of Don James' head coaching career. Playing on that team at TE was Gary Pinkel, the third member in this tribute going into the College Hall of Fame. That 1971 team also had Jack Lambert, not a College HOF member, but an NFL Hall of Famer. Another member of the team was defensive back Nick Saban who had his first college HC job at Toledo - and a sure-fire future College Hall of Fame member. BTW - Don James is also a member of the College HOF and a 3x National Coach of the Year winner at Washington. Pinkel both played for James and was an assistant to James at Washington from 1979 to 1991.

The fact that Mel Long had a Great Dane in his dorm room is just awesome.
So glad I drove in for that. Sat at a table that had a member of the search committee for Pinkel. Fun insight on the process. Event was really well done. Hard to believe they only charged $25 bucks.
Got to speak with Mr Blair. The man is genuine in his excitement for our program.

Another ironic tidbit. Heard the memories of the shutout of Marshall that one year last night and then on the way to west Lafayette today came across some Marshall fans on the way to Notre Dame at McDonalds at US 24 and US 31
Hope they enjoy the pretzels

Mel's black and white Great Dane was named "Santan". Understandable that the Resident Advisor never approached Mel about having a dog in his room. One of the many amazing thing about those years in Carter Hall.

Agree that last night's function was a great event, $25 price for a nice buffet. Mark Bier did his usual great job of interviewing all 3 guys. Lead of the discussions by reminding us that Mel Long was drafted into the Marines and, according to Mark is the most decorated player in the CFBHOF! Some really great discussion on all parts and a surprising amount of 35-0 Rockets in attendance as well. Great night indeed.
