He picked the wrong sport
Can you think of a 2-sport college athlete who arguably went pro in his lesser sport? Two I can think of:

Charlie Ward
Kyler Murray

Not sure how you can say that about Kyler, since he has done well, and has made/will make a lot more money than the A's would have paid.

No guarantee Kyler would even make MLB.

Murray was a 1st round MLB pick! He could’ve played baseball for 20’years and made big $$! Only the elite QBs make as much as top baseball players.

Both made the correct decisions IMO. Charlie Ward would not survive at QB in the 90's NFL. Kyler became and immediate star in the NFL while he would be just making his way to the bigs in MLB.

Not all (or most) 1st round picks make the majors. And almost none play for 20 years.

He's in his third year in the NFL and already making big $$.

His annual salary is almost as much as the A"s ENTIRE payroll.
