"NIU’s freshman class grows again, shines academically"

Headline is positive, but of course..... "Total NIU enrollment for fall 2022 is 15,649, a decrease of 3.6% from a year ago. Overall, both undergraduate and Graduate School enrollment decreased."

So ready for a new president and AD, I'm sure some will argue otherwise, but hope one or both happen soon.

Absolute Clown show running NIU these days. Enjoy the next few years of Huskie sports. With another 600 less students on campus this fall, we will be in FCS very soon. It is not sustainable anymore. Just a piss poor job to show this garbage as positive results as NIU circles the toilet drain. NIU Admin Please stop blaming COVID for your failure. That is just weak.

Eastern Illinois, Western Illinois, and Illinois State all reported increased enrollment year over year. NIU is one of the only state schools still reporting declines. Agree, NIU’s enrollment strategy is broken.

If EIU and WIU can make small enrollment gains in 2022 Illinois, it's a joke that we can't creep forward as well. Need to get rid of Lisa Freeman and her horde of self-congratulating cronies ASAP.

Everybody assumes that gangs come from Chicago. But they also maybe coming from Rockford or Aurora.
But we really should be looking at the long-term solution is to lift everybody's socio-economic value so people do have to join gangs to survive.

I was in law enforcement a long time, and these "socio-economic" issues are global and endemic in nature. Focusing on that on a macro level is for NIU/DeKalb is as effective as trying to stop "climate change" on a local level.

It's now surprise as sentences and jail terms are reduced and law enforcement is vilified, crime has risen. And I'm talking about violent offenders, although the "quality of life" crimes such as shoplifting has reduced many urban downtowns into dystopias.

And most criminal don't steal to "survive" ,it's to avoid long term commitments to work.

I understand that change isn't going to happen overnight and it will take a lot of time that my great-grandkids will probably never see it's full effect but it has to start sometime. If lives improves just a little bit every year,, it's a start.

And people that steal because they don't want to work are called Grifters and Con-Artists. And unfortunately we don't seem to arrests those people.

We are definitely arresting people. We have a larger prison population (and percent of population) than pretty much every country on planet Earth.
I know we arrest a lot of people, the prison is filled with brown and black people, but I was referring to Grifters and Con-Artists, they always seem to be above the law.

Ah ok, yea I agree with that 100%.

I'm really at a loss of words and have no argument for what's happened to NIU. I've been in denial for a while. But the facts are, student population is dramatically down. Campus and community safety are far from what it once was. The carefree collegiate experience I had a little more than a decade ago, is so distant from reality now.

I do like the ambitious plans of revamping downtown. But many more changes need to happen to save our beloved university. Those students deserve the same opportunities I got, because NIU is a very special place to me. Without this school and community, I wouldn't have become who I am today. I hope many have that shot at a similar experience, because NIU is hardworking and blue collar. We don't smell our own farts.

RE: 2022 enrollment
If many economists who are predicting a recession in the next year are correct, going to college right now is probably not the best idea. They will be graduating into a recession with a ton of student loan debt and potentially few prospective job opportunities.

I'd say they should enter the workforce and secure a job coming out of high school now. There are many well-paying tradecraft opportunities and companies that will pay for it.

Unless you are going into STEM, I just don't see college worth it anymore. It's far too expensive if you have to pay for yourself and then you graduate with a huge financial burden that limits your ability to buy a home or start a family.

That's true. I've read that there is a shortage for a lot of skilled labor. Because a lot of kids chose the college route. Now that many skilled laborist are retiring, the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. I've always wanted to be a mechanic.

In interviewing contractors for remodeling work, all expressed the inability to find anyone who is worthy of hiring. Many of the younger generation, their words not mine, just don't want to work. Some show up for a day or two and then disappear never coming around for their checks. Definitely going to be a shortage when the current 50+ generation of tradesman retire.

This is what I'm hearing in other businesses too (like retail). So, how is this "younger generation" getting by - on government handouts? For a while, may were sitting pretty with the COVID unemployment payments, but I think those have dried up.

I don’t know where the line between progress and work ethic is drawn. I did some preposterously hard labor work when I was young. The kind I wouldn’t advise for anyone. But it made any work I did(physically) laughably easy down the road. It’s destined for each generation to toil at least a little less than the previous. That’s progress. But then again you can’t have an entire generation of YouTubers, gamers, Uber drivers and social influencers.

RE: 2022 enrollment
I live close to an industrial area. You drive down the main road, and there are dozens of "Help Wanted" signs practically begging for people to apply. This is the real cause of those "supply chain" issues that companies are continually blaming for slow manufacturing or not providing a service. The main supply issue is the lack of workers to do the job.

There is an article in today's Chronicle about the enrollment decline. However, it said that freshman enrollment has increased.

I saw an article that says that ISU had their largest freshmen class in 35 years. This was an 18% increase from last year and a 2% increase in total enrollment.

ISU's freshman class incoming GPA and test scores are also at all-time high.

Why not hire ISU's recruitment coordinator and his team? Make an offer to Pat Walsh that he cannot refuse.

RE: 2022 enrollment
Has anyone been through Bloomington-Normal recently? It has much more of a typical college town environment than DeKalb. This is perceived as attractive and safe to prospective Chicago metro students and parents. Conversely, to many downstate kids from rural areas, it is appealing as a big city as an alternative to U of I. The ISU leadership and the city council/local government have worked very hard together to change the image of the school and the community. NIU should take lessons from that synergistic relationship.

Hurts to give ISU credit but very well said. 4 kids in my sibling group. Iowa City (1) by far the best but ISU was very much enjoyed by my youngest brother (1). Def had a U of I light feel but definitely collegiate. The town supports the school. The other 2 of us are NIU grads. I left with 23k students and he left at the peak in 09 with 26k.

Very distressing. I had two buddies play baseball at MAcMurray downstate. At least we haven’t closed yet!!!05-nono
