RE: MAC Home Attendance
Here's a couple articles about MAC schools buying tickets with student fee revenue.

Pepsi cans. You forgot to take into consideration the Pepsi cans that show up every year. :)

I do believe in counting paid tickets -- but I'd put a limit on %. If 20,000 tickets were bought, but only 10,000 fans showed (horrible weather coming in unexpectedly) -- I'd put a max of 25% (12,500).

Miami has a home game this week with Univ of Cincinnati at the NFL stadium in Cincinnati and should have close to 50k in attendance there, although most of them will be UC fans.

Interesting to see how Kalamazoo turns out for this Saturday. WMU hosting a Top 25 team, home opener, weather looking summery.

Schools can report tickets sold or they can report people who actually show up. Neither approach is fake.

I was at the Rose Bowl last weekend and UCLA claiming 27,000+ showed up seemed quite generous. It was dreadfully hot and students are not on campus yet, so many people did not bother to go. (Of the five tickets I bought, I only used two, but I assume I counted as "five" in the eyes of UCLA and the box score.)

This isn't just a MAC thing.

None of that answers who and why though.

Who is buying all these extra tickets? The schools themselves?

Why are they buying all these extra tickets to report higher averages?

The NCAA is not kicking anyone out for not reaching 15k attendance average. There's too many bowl games that already are featuring teams with losing records and the NCAA has mostly been stripped of its ability to regulate FBS. If schools are still buying tickets just to report higher attendance they are wasting their money.

Universities routinely throw in free tickets for corporate sponsors which are used to count towards the total attendance. Used to work for a company in Toledo that sponsored Rocket football and basically everyone at the office had access to a free ticket if they wanted to go.

Exactly. When it first started, attendance was one of a list of things, each of them qualified schools as I-A. When I-AA was established, there was hope that more conferences would go that route than ending up doing so. So the NCAA change and "or" to an "and" and required meeting all of the tests.

But it turned out that power conferences included schools that couldn't guarantee hitting the attendance target year in and year out, so in the end they relented and let schools decide whether to report turnstile counts or tickets sold. The power conference "small stadium" schools in the power conferences could make sure to "sell" enough tickets through sponsors to be fine.

Sure, that meant that conferences like the MAC could also take advantage of that to beat back the effort to force the MAC to go down to I-AA (later renamed FCS), but the power conferences of the day didn't want to downgrade the MAC schools badly enough to kick out any of their own schools in the process.

In practice, the rule has become a minimum stadium size rule, since you can't count a ticket sold when you cannot show where a person holding that ticket can go to watch the game.

Even that has now been forgotten as they recently accepted Sam Houston State and their nice D3 facility (12k seats and nice running track) into FBS.

Sam's AD recently announced they were planning to get rid of the track. It's about damn time. That thing is an eye sore.

30,109 for UC-Miami at Paycor. Miami home game... 50miles from campus. Probably 20,000 or a few more were rooting for UC.

NIU needs to start using made up numbers too.

Apparently AAC does it as well though, Tulsa announced 17k and they had no where close to that.

So NIU is the only school accurately reporting attendance? Nahhh

I didn't say we were. But why do schools keep reporting fake numbers? Is Pepsi still buying a bunch of EMU tickets? Who is buying tickets for a bunch of other G5 schools or are schools buying their own tickets?

I don't think the NCAA is gonna kick you out of FBS anymore. I don't think we've averaged 15k in last three or four years.

I can at least say that the NIU numbers are not exaggerated. Based on capacity and how much of the stadium was full, we had at least as many as reported. That seems unlikely with many other schools.

Yes, neither team's season tickets apply to this game. Had the game been at Nippert, it would not have been our home game. I guess I don't get your point.

Judging by the content of his other posts, he's just thumping his chest about how much better 'support' Cincy gets.

I'm not sure who he's debating, or trying to debate. Everyone here knows the MAC is consistently at/near the bottom of the FBS pile performance wise, and our meager fan bases and semi-rural markets make us the least sexy conference in the landscape.

If our athletic department/university had ANY clue about how to run a gameday, I bet our attendance would be not so pathetic.
