Exclamation Best player, next man up thread
We need a mega thread on this board. So I thought of an idea that isn't music or alcohol or whatever.

You are to list the best player for Marshall you can think of. You may explain why.

Rules:
1. ONE NAME PER POST!!! It doesn't work if someone lists their top ten players, etc.

2. You can't list an already used name!! It has to be a different one. If you accidentally duplicate due to posting at same time the lower post must edit.

3. History is not an issue. Any time period.

4. You can't post again till someone else adds a name.

5. Try to list the next best player you can think of, not necessarily your favorite player.

I figure after a while we'll have a pretty good de facto list on the best to play the game at Marshall. Or an empty thread that no one cares about, lol. I encourage lurkers to make an account and throw their hat in the ring. Since I'm not a mod, maybe TS can edit repeats or those that double post or whatever.

I'll start it off with Randy Moss.

Best athlete in pretty much the world in his prime. Instantly competitive at anything he's ever tried. Broke every record in just 2 years in college. Is an NFL Hall of Famer and arguably considered the best receiver to ever play the game at that level. We were lucky to get a glimpse of this unicorn.

Fuzzy Filliez

Set school records for the Thundering Herd in every major receiving category from 1973-1976. Filliez hauled in 168 catches for 1,954 yards and 14 touchdowns. Inducted into the Marshall Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986.

RE: Best player, next man up thread
Chad Pennington. Whilst he got his records broken in 2014, he is the ONLY QB to lead the Herd to three 1-A MAC East Division Championships, three 1-A MAC Championships, three Bowl appearances going 2-1, a #10 final ranking in the polls, an undefeated 1999 season, and one 1-AA National Championship Game appearance. As a Marshall QB, he went 35-4 at the 1-A level and 12-3 at the 1-AA level for a combined record of 47-7 (.869).

EDIT: Marshall didn't win the 1995 SOCON... APP did.

Michael Payton: Led Marshall to back to back I-AA title contests, both times against Youngstown State. The second time in the 1992 NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship Game, Marshall won their first I-AA title.

He was named Southern Conference Player of the Year, - (2x)
West Virginia Athlete of the Year and Man of the Year - (2x)
Marshall's only recipient of the prestigious Walter Payton Award for the best player in I-AA - 1992
Finished his career at Marshall as the Southern Conference's all-time career passing leader.

RE: Best player, next man up thread
Darius Watts. The Spiderman.

Leftwich would not have been Leftwich without this man.

"Watts played 48 career games at Marshall, he recorded 272 receptions for 4,031 yards (14.8 avg.) and 47 touchdowns. His 272 career receptions ranked fifth all-time in NCAA Division I-A history and were a Mid-American Conference record while only Troy Edwards of Louisiana Tech (50 in 1996-98) had more touchdown receptions in a career in NCAA Division I-A history than Watts' MAC-record 47 career touchdowns. Additionally, his 4,031 career receiving yards were topped only by Mike Barber (4,262, 1985–88) in school history.

In 2000, Watts was one of only two true freshmen to play for Marshall, starting four games to record 36 catches for 616 yards (17.1 avg.) with six touchdowns. He earned First-team All-MAC honors in 2001 as a sophomore, and was one of 11 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award, recording career-highs in receptions (91) and receiving yards (1,417), a 15.6 yards-per-reception average, along with an NCAA-high 18 touchdowns that ranked third on the school's single-season list. His 91 receptions ranked fourth all-time in school history for a single-season, and he recorded the most catches in a season since Marshall returned to Division I-A competition by passing the 90 receptions by Randy Moss in 1997. He tied for the second-most receptions in MAC history, his yardage total was third best and his touchdown total tied him for the second best in MAC history as well. As a junior in 2002, he was preseason All-America selection. He also earned First-team All-MAC honors with 71 receptions for 1,030 yards (14.7 avg.) and 12 touchdowns and became the MAC's All-Time touchdown receptions leader. As a senior in 2003, he Watts was a team capitan for the second consecutive season and he recorded 74 receptions for 968 yards (13.1 avg.) and 11 touchdowns."

And he did all that while also having other prolific receivers on the team like Denaro Marriott and Josh Davis.
