Rice at USC Football
No game notes online yet for Rice. I'm curious to see how our first depth chart shakes down (wondering how many of the transfers will be listed as starters).

I do see that Los Angeles is in the midst of an excessive heat warning until the early part of next week. The high in Los Angeles Saturday is expected to be 98, and kickoff is 3 pm local time so there won't be much shade on either sideline. We should be used to warm weather, but I do wonder if the heat could still be a factor for both teams.

If Rice players aren’t at least as conditioned for heat as USC’s, that’s inexcusable.

I understand what you're saying, but home teams notoriously have more shade than road teams. And sometimes, teams can't bring all their cooling down equipment (fans, water misters, etc.) on the road. I bet you cramping becomes an issue for both teams. It's pretty ironic that the high temperature Saturday in Los Angeles might be 20 degrees hotter than Houston (it's supposed to pour all day so it's possible the high only reaches the low 80's).

RE: Rice at USC Football
USC was supposed to release a depth chart today but none came. Seems like there are some nailed down starters but also a lot of question marks. Caleb Williams and Jordan Addison are obviously the big names. Williams can win the Heisman and Addison was the best receiver in the country last year as a sophomore. Travis Dye should start at HB. He ran for 1,271 yards last year at Oregon. They also have a couple of really solid offensive linemen. But if we don't score on their defense, I'd be disappointed. Outside of DT Tuli Tuipolutu, there is very little standout talent on that unit. They didn't add the impact transfers that they did on offense and their returnees are underwhelming.

Considering our past struggles with offenses similar to that which Lincoln Riley likes to run, I can't envision this being a close one. But ideally we put forward an effort like last year against Arkansas. Giving up 40/50+ to this team is expected - they have a frightening group of skill players. But I'd find myself frustrated if we don't score at least 20 against their starters.

The Coliseum actually faces due east/west, so the sun won't be directly on one stand or another but shining down the middle of the field. Hopefully we brought the helmet sun visors.

For me, those days are long gone, replaced only by a vague hope that somehow he will finally prove me wrong.

And probably the last optimistic article we’ll see from the Chronicle this year.

The first two lines in the article tells it all. Actually I am pretty shocked that Rice is actually discussed in the Daily Tillman (um err the Houston Chronicle)

Good read on Rice's view of USC and Bloom and Tuiasosopo highlighting their experience dealing w/ Grinch at Wash St and his defensive schemes. More confidence coming from the Owls than one would expect.

Our game notes are as well. The only transfer who is listed currently as a starter is the punter (Conor Hunt). Actually the Rutgers transfer is listed as the either/or starter at LB with Siano. Quite a few transfers are listed as back-ups but where is Sam Crawford (from Tulsa) and the Notre Dame safety?

Surprising that VanSickle is the starting K instead of Horn.

There really is no excuse for our defense not to be good against teams at our level. That's a really solid unit with experience.

I'm excited to get Rozner back and see what McCaffrey can do. Pretty pessimistic about everything else

Not surprisingly I guess, after being up for 12+ hours, there are no comments on the article.

I was surprised to see that the famous colonnade and the bier for the Olympic flame are at the east end of the stadium. I would have guess that they were at the west end, so the sun would set behind them. But for that very reason, I guess it makes more sense to fill the west end with seats than the east tend.
