Confirmed: Big12 opens media rights negotiations early

Really can’t wait to get some real tv valuations with PAC vs Big12 realignment.

RE: Confirmed: Big12 opens media rights negotiations early
It reads as the big12 initiated early renegotiation rather than the networks. In all probability to get hard numbers for expansion. It could also mean to cover impending pac 12 additions for 24/25 as their contract ends in 24 but the big 12’s doesn’t end till 25.

Probably a good move. FOX can work with or without ESPN. It can extend its 1/2 of contract, and even lock up the extra games that become available with further expansion. For networks there is no losing side in this, they still have current deal locked in and exclusive negotiation period ahead of them.

RE: Confirmed: Big12 opens media rights negotiations early
There may have been a limit to how many more the big 12 can add under contract and 4 was the limit under current contract.
So this news to me is all about further big 12 expansion of likely pac 12 programs.

edit: the big 12 would have been better of waiting till 24 to negotiate new contracts for 25. they would have had a year with the n4 playing as members. i don't think going to market before the pac matters all that much financially because a lot can change in 2 years. there are both pros and cons to moving early and it isn't obvious early is better. so this move is about expansion predominantly. pac 12 additions in particular. any g5 additions could have waited till 25 and as the n4 did, any g5 would jump to the big12 without firm numbers. at minimum the big 12 will be making substantially more than any g5. pac schools however would want firm numbers. in addition the pac program may want to join by 24 when their media contract ends. They certainly don't want a gap year. The big 12 may have also hit a limit of allowed expansions per the current contract (I vaguely recalled expansion up to 14 members was permissible). the solution then to firmness for adding and timing mandate early renegotiation.

This is positive for the Big 12 any way you look at it.
They can go to the networks and say what number can we get with these schools, how about these schools, etc.
Then they can show any Pac (SDSU?) school a hard number.

They also do not have to wait on B1G or ND.

They do have leverage because CFB contracts are going parabolic and ESPN/Fox would be happy to lock in content that is just below premium (to go with ACC/SEC).

Also the Big 12's way of asking ESPN & the SEC: how much is an early exit for Oklahoma & Texas worth to you? Boost our numbers and maybe we'll cut them some slack on the exit fees.

I wonder if this will be the bargaining chip to get a better tv deal to be able to entice the 4 corner schools to come. They know the PAC time is limited anyway, the PAC didn't take USC & UCLA to at the very least add 2 more schools. The interesting thing is that probably at least involves Stanford and leaves the chance that UW or Oregon and probably more likely Oregon gets left behind by the B1G.

i think this is a great move by the B12 - get somewhat solid numbers, to show the PAC schools, maybe negotiate UT & OU out early. i saw somewhere that this was referred to as negotiations on an extension, as opposed to being on a new contract - maybe its just semantics, but, a short extension would allow the B12 to take care of a couple of pressing issues ( the PAC and UT/OU)

Well- we can now show them some solid data if we can get some reliable rate quotes.

It would be hilarious if the 4 corners school join the B12 and the B1G stands pat leaving the other 6 in limbo or to merge with MWC.

More likely WA and OR get a B1G invite an only 4 merge with MWC.

I say bake in the OU/UT exit fees (all of it) into new media deal.

?? The 2 things have nothing to do with each other. The legacy 8 should work out a deal and grab $$ that will be lost if the 2 stay thru 2025. Work out a deal for more than the Pac can get, try to grab the schools you want, and do an extension to the current deal. Maybe 5 years. Gives the conference time to adjust and be ready for the next merry go round. 04-cheers

"extension of its current agreements" says to me keep the current deal past 2025 and
1. same payout without OUT and or
2. additional membership beyond the 14 after OUT

It just means Big12 is not on the open market. It’s exclusive to FOX/ESPN.

Texas and OU owe two years prior distributions no matter when they leave all the way until 2111

the GOR ending does not end the contract that has the exit fees in it

Also a good sign that they're negotiating an early exit for Texas and Oklahoma. That would point not towards those schools exiting for the SEC in 2024 meanwhile in-coming Pac-12 schools would follow the USC/UCLA/B1G timeline of entering of leaving in 2024 and joining the Big 12. This can't be a coincidence.

Basically I'm sayin the TV partners can pay for their exit fees and then they can leave early.

The exit fees aren't what is keeping OUT in the league. That money (two years worth of revenue) is owed whether they leave this year or in 2025. The thing that is keeping them in is their media rights, which the Big 12 own through the life of this current TV deal.

OUT would have negotiate a settlement separate from the exit fee money to buy back their media rights before 2025. There's some belief a new TV deal would change that, which is likely why the Big 12 has been hesitant to open early negotiations before now.
