Thamel: Fox/ESPN Open Talks with the BXII
Thamel: FOX, ESPN in open talks with Big 12 about next TV deal
https://www.espn.com/college-sports/stor...ision-deal

Fox and ESPN have agreed to engage in discussions with the Big 12 about the league's next television contract, sources told ESPN.

The imminent opening of these conversations is significant, as they come more than a year and a half before the league's television contract calls for a formal, exclusive negotiating window with both current partners. This development allows the Big 12, which has a contract through the 2024 football season, to potentially get tangible future revenue numbers for both its member schools and potential additions.

Already a good sign that there are two interested media partners...Pac-12 only got ESPN to give them a low-ball offer in their window.

Yes. Plus, this is one of the reasons the B12 hired Brett Yormark. Let's see what he can market and negotiate. I'm optimistic...

Baylor AD last night on 365 Sports Radio that the BXII/Yormarck will be aggressive in the near future (not necessarily adding teams short term but indicative of change).

I was hoping we would add from PAC12 before negotiating this

Suddenly ESPN is Jerry McGuire to the B12's Rod Tidwell.

Oh, we can be sure that's all on the table and Fox/ESPN have reams of historical data crunched on all schools and media markets in the Pac 12. I could envision a scenario where the media partners share those numbers with Yormark and let him draw conclusions for the Big 12 leadership on the value of the four corners schools, or others, in the Pac 12. I think we'll know more sooner, rather than later with Fox/ESPN starting the process now. One has to think the accelerated timetable for B12 conversations coming a month after the B10 expanded, is all part of a major reshuffling that is still in progress.

I think that's exactly what's going on. Yormack can certainly make educated guesses as to the value of the PAC-12 schools but he can't know for sure what Fox/ESPN would give them for adding those schools without hearing from Fox/ESPN themselves. It could be Fox/ESPN sees Zona/ASU/Colorado/Utah as net-positives to the TV contract, in which case Yormack would dish out invites 5 minutes later. Or Fox/ESPN could advise that they're net-negatives to the contract, in which case that makes Yormack's next move more complicated.

Bolded, that could be the case. But it's hard to imagine that adding the #10 metro area Phoenix with the nation's seventh largest enrollment university in ASU for example, wouldn't move the needle in the right direction for the Big 12. The Big 12 has the #4 (Dallas/Fort Worth) and #5 (Houston) markets now, so ASU presents even a bigger market opportunity than Orlando (#23) did a year ago.

The Pac-12 is on its deathbed and that's great news for UC.

RE: Thamel: Fox/ESPN Open Talks with the BXII
I think ESPN/Fox want to have a say on who comes in and may be the main reason they are starting early. I strongly believe that we will see some more realignment moves toward the end of negotiations (Or there will be wording in place for additional teams). I think the league probably figured it was in their best interests to get the potential TV partners included to get a gauge on how to get the best deal and who to add to get that deal.

Totally agree, I really can't see a scenario where adding those 4 schools would be a net-negative to the Big 12. Then again, 3 months ago I couldn't envision USC and UCLA leaving for the Big Ten. So anything's possible, I guess.

I would love having Phoenix or Tucson on the schedule in the late fall...make a golf weekend out of a football game every now and again.

Well, that's another interesting chess move. I'm sure the SEC wants TX/OK sooner rather than later and being able to backload the B12 from the Pac 12 quickly could accomplish that quite well.

I could hardly have imagined better news than what we all got a year ago with the Big 12 invitation. But I'm very excited now about the possibility of adding major flagship universities in the west to secure our conference in a new P4 configuration. And, oh yea, those trips to Tucson for basketball or Phoenix for football will be more enticing than most B10 travel destinations in fall or winter.
