“I continue to believe the ACC is strong, and among the very best all-around conferences in the nation," Phillips told ESPN. "I'm confident in our desire of staying together. I know that there's a lot of rumors and speculation. We all understand people want answers and certainty. But we're really aligned right now, and we feel like we got some really good solutions to address some of the revenue gap. But it can't be at the expense of all of these things that we're doing.
What’s the solution?
What a joke? I have not heard more delusional talk in my life!
"We all desire to stay together." Read the room, Jim. Just because people tell you they want to stay together doesnt mean that they arent planning their exit strategy. Do you think UCLA was advertising their desire to leave? What are you doing? Where is the leadership? Where is the plan. Where are the "really good solutions"?
ESPN mentions in the next paragraph, un-even distribution. That sure will keep the conference together. That worked so well for Texas and Oklahoma. I am glad our solution to save the sinking ship is to throw conference members overboard.
I can't even believe he goes on to mention his trips to watch ACC games. I know every comissioner does this, but seriously you have nothing else to talk about. How about instead of sitting down and taking it from ESPN, you expand to leverage a larger ACC against ESPN?Expansion opens up the contract. Bet on yourselves and gain value no matter how large you have to make yourself.
A western wing and central wing would solidify the ACC as conference 3 an entity that can ensure a healthy middle class. An organization that can leverage the networks against each other as something they would need to have.
What are we paying Phillips for? Is he contracted to make a certain number of 60s era NCAA speechs per season?
What does he even mean by "it cant be at the expense of what we are already doing" What are we even doing? Signing conference marketing deals for pennies is not going to close the gap. The revenue will need to come from the broadcasters. Make that happen. Phillips has not brought a dime of new media money in during his tenure. The rollout of ACCN was already in process before Phillips came aboard. Again I said what are we doing here? Why are we paying you so much to keep the boat hurtling toward the iceberg?
