Not sure if the roughly 8,000 students at Blue Ash and Clermont are included in those figures. They could maybe look to expand the regional campuses to get to 60k?

UC gave up on cracking the top 100 in the USNWR almost a decade ago. The goal is clearly to expand enrollment. This spring/early summer Dr. Pinto said the goal is to be at 60,000 students by 2030.

Bolded, and they're doing a fine job at that. Bigger isn't always better but it's still more--more tuition revenue, more state support for operations and capital improvements in the way Ohio funds the public universities.

UC is now clearly separated from the regional publics as Ohio's "other" major public research engine and the undergraduate school of choice in Ohio, alongside that school up I-71. OSU first got big, then upped its game on enrollment selectivity. Maybe UC follows this same playbook, albeit decades later.

As we all know too, being part of a "power" conference in athletics was another step forward on a big stage. Prospective students don't always make rational choices for their undergraduate education, but if big-time athletics is a draw, the Bearcats have helped the cause and this will only get better with the increased exposure of the Big 12.

Unless campus builds vertically, more capital improvements will soon require an expanded footprint, and there aren't a lot of socially or politically palatable options available. Something's gotta give. Either we acquire Burnett Woods or resume nibbling away at surrounding residential neighborhoods. Without more ground, and with the construction of more facilities to accommodate the incoming hordes, UC's campus may soon have the same panache as an in-grown toenail.

Has UC officially and publicly identified current enrollment growth and an eventual shift to greater selectivity as a strategy or goal?

It appears Hebrew Union College will exit Cincinnati and that's a beautiful, small campus that practically connects the dots between the intersection of Clifton Avenue and MLK. I have no idea if that's been explored by UC, but with the footprint issue you've alluded to, I would think there might be a mutually beneficial opportunity there.

It's been years since I drove by the Hebrew Union campus. If it's in good shape, then that's a worthy idea. And if it isn't, that's still a worthy idea. Prime real estate.

The goal is to cram in as many customers as possible. Even more so if they have those federal loans sending checks directly.

Typically they are...as are any College Credit Plus students, and part-timers.

Here's what the article specifically said regarding the race of the incoming students..."23% increase in Black students in incoming class
21% increase in Latinx students in incoming class."

You left out the most important word...INCREASE. That doesn't mean 21% of this class is African American. It means this class has seen an INCREASE of 21% of African American students from last year.

That's a very important distinction and shows that while UC diversity is improving, it is still much lower the national averages for the minority groups you pointed out.

Let me openly state that it looks like nacho really went out of his way to distort the info so he could blather hysterics about race. It appears with the increase blacks and Latinos are still underrepresented?

They plan to continue to grow, with an enrollment goal of 60,000 by 2030.
The devil is in the details on how they are getting to that number, whether they intend to buy up more land in the uptown area, an adjacent area or elsewhere.

Why in the world does UC need to get to 60,000? I thought 48,000 was the goal

UC was offering pretty sweet inducements to get incoming sophomores who had signed up for university housing, to give it up.

They have had to put students in hotels due to lack of university housing.

I moved my daughter in to the Deacon yesterday (she is a sophomore).

I would think that Calhoun dorm would be back on line next fall (2023)?

It set a goal of reaching 60,000 students by 2030. Miner touted UC's cooperative education programs as a reason for success. Those programs allow students to alternate between academic semesters and semesters of full-time work in their career field. In the fall of 2019, 39,263 students enrolled at UC's main campus.Jun 8, 2022

I know AAU is not a realistic goal, but if you look at a lot of the Power 5 AAU schools that are out there UC is somewhat similar in their research efforts, but with less faculty. Sustained growth into an OSU type of model for the Tri-State area will put us on par with many of the secondary state flagships in the Power 5 as well. You can see the vision clearly with how much real estate has been bought up by the University from 71 to 75. More students, more faculty, more research, more money.

Excellent visual, thanks for sharing.

UC is in the right neighborhood, but still not quite the right street so to speak. Movement is typically slow and costly in terms of both R&D revenue and faculty acquisition. The Innovation District is meant to help and it will.

One challenge regarding research faculty that was shared with me in the past is their preference to be on either coast. Cincinnati is a great city but for folks educated or working in Boston, NY, San Francisco, etc., it's hard work to pry them away in many cases. From my corporate experience, getting them here to take a look is often the toughest battle. For those who do, and relocate here, many regard it as the best life decision they ever made.

RE: Enrollment now 48,300
I wouldn't call AAU membership an "unrealistic goal." It's just not right around the corner like Ono had everyone believing. Right now, NCSU is probably the strongest public contender, but UC is in a small group of schools that are right behind. Getting a Comprehensive Cancer Center designation for the med school will be a huge step towards ultimately being on the AAU short list.

And it's not only just pure research dollars. AAU looks at a lot of soft metrics including undergraduate reputation and the strength of a university's core Arts & Sciences departments (GaTech was kept out for a long time due to being viewed as being too one-dimensional). I've posted these rankings before. They don't go as in-depth as what the AAU would look at, but they're a good snapshot of how universities rank based on nine metrics covering everything from research funding to financial resources to faculty quality and undergraduate selectivity. UC looks good, just not there quite yet.

RE: Enrollment now 48,300
Watching Channel 9 locally yesterday, there was excellent coverage of UC's record enrollment and students' first days on campus. Unfortunately, there was accompanying coverage of the student housing mess, much brought on by The Deaconess, where the the Channel 9 report highlighted all sorts of problems with cleanliness, HVAC operations, and a host of issues one would never expect in a relatively new property. According to the report, UC is taking over cleaning and maintenance immediately (not sure what that means at a private commercial property) and housing students in hotels until safety/quality issues are resolved.

I only share all this because enrolling more and more puts increasing pressure on university and private housing sources. Even when Calhoun Hall re-opens, Siddall will probably close for renovation, so there will be no net gain in the short term. All this is to say that while The Deaconess may not be under UC's control, our University gets tarred with the same brush when student housing options are unattractive. That's not a good look for a University aspiring to enroll 60,000 in the near future.

My guess is that UC does with The Deacon what they did previously with UPA and Stratford Heights. They come in gently by taking over multiple maintenance/service deals, then they offer to purchase and it becomes a UC residence hall. Smart move, allows for UC to not deplete their cash reserves building these buildings, and can stretch the purchase over 10-15 years as debt service instead.

Those who were around even 10-15 years ago would be amazed how much of the stretch from Clifton Ave to I-71 has turned into UC student housing.

Yep, Towne Properties got in early and often, then off-loaded most everything up by campus for cash a few years ago. Whoever runs that company is either extremely lucky or extremely smart.
