UT Volleyball 2022
Volleyball season starts this week. UT had a exhibition match against Findlay yesterday, and like soccer before it, not a single report about that on any UT media channel. There is not even a media guide out yet for the season.

Rockets start the OOC season with a west coast trip to an Arizona State tourney. They will play Northern Iowa on Friday 8/26, and follow-up with matches against CSU-Bakersfield, and then ASU.

They follow that up with road tournaments at Michigan and Western Kentucky, before UT's lone home OOC tourney Sep 16-17.

Coach Oliver was recently on the Rocket Liftoff Podcast:
https://art19.com/shows/the-rocket-lifto...f685739522
(Brent, can you please not pontificate for 3 minutes before you ask a question.)

In the episode, coach seems very optimistic about the team's prospects they year (of course, coaches always are.) He especially talked up setter Payton Morman, saying he believes she has made huge leaps in the off-season. Hopefully that is true, after him benching her in favor of true freshman Redmon last year.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Preseason poll picks UT to finish 3rd in the west (not sure why Volleyball still had divisions) and Taylor Alt preseason All-MAC.

Also, the game against Arizona State on Saturday is supposed to be televised on the PAC-12 Arizona channel, which I seem to get on Spectrum. It's listed on the TV schedule as starting 6PM Eastern.

Good way to start the season. Looks like Alt didn't have a great match and surprising to see Bouyer leading in kills. That would be a big boost if she can add bring offense this year.

From the pictures posted on twitter, looks like Alford did not dress, and someone else was maybe on crutches ... by process of elimination - Ramlow maybe?

Rockets take set 1 from the Sun Devils, 25-19. If not for a bad patch in the middle of the set where UT made a bunch of errors, it would not have even been that close.

Filisi leading UT with 4 kills

And UT takes set 2 25-22!

Rockets survived 4 service errors in the set. Jada Bouyer now leading the Rockets with 8 kills. 5 players with at least 4

Rockets WIN, 25-21 in the 3rd, for the sweep against the PAC-12 Devils on their home floor.

Coming out party for Jada Bouyer as she led the Rockets with 12 kills, hitting a blistering .550 and dominating set 3, Olivia Vance with 5 blocks. Alt and Filisi 8 kills each.

What a way to start the season.

Starting the season 3-0 including a win over a P5 school is certainly worthy of a “Well Done, Rockets”!

Quick dose of reality for the Rockets playing at the Michigan tournament. They lose to UM and to Loyola Chicago, both in straight sets. They are both really good teams, but the Rockets couldn't ever really make a match out of either one as half the sets were blowouts.

Need to regroup for next week in Bowling Green - Kentucky.

Can you tell if there has been a big drop-off with the new/old setter moving back into the lineup for the one who transferred back home?

Can't say. Only match that has been available to view was the ASU match, and they looked to play well there.

From viewing the stats, the big issue against UM & Loyola was defense, although again, those two are both very, very good teams. Loyola also beat BG 3-1 right before BG went and beat Tennessee. So, I wouldn't read much into that relative to MAC play.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets took out their frustration on Morehead State today, demolishing them in 3 sets. The 1st 2 sets went 25-12 and 25-14 before UT emptied the bench in the 3rd, and still took it 25-22. Interestingly MSU had taken a set from Loyola the day before. Hmm.

Rocket stats from today were amazing - Jada Boyer hit .786 and Rhyenne Filisi hit .778, which is kinda unheard on in D1 VB. Overall UT hit .418. Ana Alford saw the 1st action of her UT career, recording 2 blocks, and FR Izzy Granger saw some meaningful time and scored 3 kills, a block and an ace.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets easily handle NKU in 3 sets at the WKU Tourney in BG Kentucky. This appears to be a decent win, as NKU took top-25-ranked WKU to 5 sets last night. They had also played BG earlier in the season and took 1 set off the falcons, and 2 other sets were close.

Rockets play WKU tonight at 7. Looks like streaming is free on the WKU facebook channel.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets got absolutely destroyed by WKU in straight sets last night. Aside from about a 10-15 point stretch at the beginning of the 3rd set, they looked, well, pretty bad. Granted, WKU is an extremely good team with an All-American MB, but still. The Achilles heel for the Rockets continues to be serve receive and passing. When the Rockets got a good pass off the serve, they ran their offense pretty well and scored consistently. But, that only seemed to happen about 25% of the time. More often, the setter is chasing down the pass somewhere and can't get a good set, nor can they run an offense that will draw the block away. Meanwhile, WKU gets a perfect pass off the serve receive - I mean the setter doesn't even have to take a step - probably 80-90% of the time. When WKU was in system, UT's D had no answer at all.

Can't imagine how NKU (the team UT steamrolled) took 2 sets from WKU, while UT wasn't remotely in any of the three sets.

UT plays Austin Peay today, and then is back home for the last tourney before MAC play.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Looks like UT lost to Austin Peay yesterday in 5 sets, despite having 16 more kills. Got blocked an astounding 17 times, and had 37 overall attack errors, which is a really big number.

It's been a disappointing OOC season. Not sure what happened to the team that dominated ASU (although to be fair, ASU is not one of the better teams in the PAC12.) Not sure what to expect when MAC play starts in a couple weeks.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets handily beat EIU in straight sets last night. Last two were complete blowouts.

EIU looked pretty bad truthfully, but UT didn't play a clean match. I think more than half of EIU's points came on UT errors, including tons and tons of service errors. Strangely, EIU beat Akron earlier in the year in straight sets, so I don't know what that says about Akron.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets open MAC play with a 3-0 sweep of EMU @ Ypsi.

EMU was 1-11 coming into the match and looked every bit of that the 1st two sets as UT dominated, with only UT errors keeping the sets from being laughers. They played better in the third, and UT's play dropped so set three was close, but UT closed it out. Alt and Bouyer led the Rockets with 11 kills each Alt added 3 aces and 2 blocks.

The same two teams do it again tomorrow.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets duplicate last night's effort and sweep EMU again. EMU played better today, and the third set got dicey, but victory was never really in doubt. Alt led the Rockets with 13 kills.

Surprise of the MAC today was CMU beating Ball State in 4 sets. BSU is the defending MAC champ that won a first round match in the NCAAs, and was predicted to finish 1st in the west again this year. CMU is the next opponent for UT, at Savage next Thursday-Friday.

Projected MAC East champs BGSU also surprisingly got pushed by Kent, but won in 4, with the 4th needing extra points.
