I was shocked by how little arm strength he has. I didn’t get the sense of that in his Troy highlights from last year.
I think he was throwing for his life on many of his downfield shots. In the first half, Creighton tried to run a Ben Bryant playbook, and our line nearly got Powell killed. In the 2nd half, we finally mixed in the run, where our line dominated, and that bought Powell some more time.
This would be a perfect offense to run…if we had a better defense. We didn’t do well last year when we were playing from behind, and I think it’ll be even worse this year. If Powell is dropping back 40-50 times a game, we are not going to win many. But if we can keep games close and use our talented stable of running backs effectively, we should be ok. I just have zero faith in our defense to allow us to do that consistently, especially after what I saw last night.
I talked to a few of the guys on the O-line after the game. The first thing each of them said is that defensively, EKU was a different team than what they were last year. This was EKU's first game this year, so the only film the Eagles had to study was last year's game film. EKU came out last night with all new d-line and blitzing schemes that were nowhere on last year's film.
If you paid attention to the the Eagle's O-line play (focused attention, not shift to watching where the ball is after the snap) you saw that as the game progressed, the offense effectively adjusted to what the EKU defense was doing.
The first quarter the O-line was struggling with trying to adjust to what they were seeing after weeks of working a game plan devised to take advantage of an EKU defensive scheme that effectively evaporated. By the second quarter, you could see them making adjustments which allowed the Offense to come from behind (this was technically a come-from-behind win for the Eagles) and go into the locker room at halftime with a lead.
They made even more adjustments at halftime and came out the second half able to run the score and stay ahead of whatever EKU did. It was pretty well balanced with run and pass, and Powell appeared to become more comfortable behind his line as the game went on.
Was it a spotless performance in the second half? No way. But the O-line and coaches made the in-game adjustments against a defensive scheme they had never seen before from EKU, and did what was needed to help the Offense pull off a win.
Was not able to start watching until the second half and felt the OLine played rather well. They even mixed up their blocking schemes.
They switched to a double tight end offense.
