RE: RIP Pete Carril
People may not remember but back in 1989 Princeton almost beat Georgetown in the first round. They would have been the first #16 seed to win an NCAA tournament game, almost 30 years before UMBC actually did it.

Also, UCLA was the defending national champion when Princeton beat them. It's not every year the defending national champion gets beat in the first round.

RE: RIP Pete Carril
I got my undergraduate degree from Princeton. From 1977 to 1981 I never missed a home basketball game.

At the time Carril was already well on his way to national prominence. There was no shot clock yet and Pete would just have his players pass, screen and cut and pass, screen and cut and pass, screen and cut until someone slipped free for a backdoor layup. It was basic fundamentals but took immense patience and discipline to execute. The strategy not only wore out the opposing defense but also reduced opportunities for the opposing offense to score. Each year Princeton was among the national leaders in shooting percentage and scoring defense.

Opposing coaches, players, and fans hated our style of play. We loved it. It was the embodiment of the philosophy Carril had learned from his immigrant father who labored for 39 years in a Bethlehem, PA steel mill: "The strong take from the weak, but the smart take from the strong." To this day one of things I most treasure about college basketball is the potential for a team that plays smart enough to triumph over a team with superior talent.
