Once again UNC appears to be overrated. I don't understand voters' love affair with the Tarheels.

I cheer for UNC and I don't get it either. Odd.

The AP Poll has North Carolina STATE at #13, UNC in ORV

The OP has fixed it!
Ah. That makes sense.

This is why all this money in CFB is going to be shown to be exagerrated.
No one wants to see these same 4-5 teams every damn year

It’s amazing how the top teams keep attracting talent. But they also keep winning on the field. Clemson had an “off” year because they lost three road games…against 1) national champion UGA, 2) ACC champs Pitt and 3) top 20 NC State.

This is college football. It has been dominated by small groups of teams for as long as I have been watching, 50 years now - 50 years where it has always been a very popular sport, btw.
The only real upset of the applecart during that time has been the emergence of three Florida schools - UF, FSU and Miami. Circa 1974 they were nothing.
Here is the AP preseason Top 10 for 1978. See any familiar faces?
1) Alabama
2) Arkansas
3) Penn State
4) Oklahoma
5) Notre Dame
6) Michigan
7) Ohio State
8) Texas
9) USC
10) Nebraska

For the most part-- but it's not all the same. Nebraska is no longer a Top 10 program and neither is USC (although they might be back in a couple years under Riley). Michigan is stable now under Harbaugh but they had a rough ride for the past 15 years. Arkansas was bad for a while but re-emerged last year with a 9-4 season.
In addition to the Florida schools you have forgotten to mention Virginia Tech who went on a 20 year run of 10+ win seasons under Beamer (but is down again), Oregon who went from obscurity to being a national player, Louisville, Utah, Oklahoma State, Baylor, etc. Its this later group that makes it all interesting.

RE: AP Top 25
I like to see the "traditional" and "unconventional" mix in college football. This continues to happen. We also have that (but to a greater extent for clear reasons) in college hoops.
If, say, Alabama and Clemson played every year for the national title, I would still watch. But ... likely with diminishing interesting each year (simply seeing Bama in six of the past eight title games has lessened my enjoyment a bit; so to see the same two teams every year ... not good).
There is an old saying that can be applied to football:
"The normal people make society function. The abnormal people make society interesting."

Wow, you mentioned 1974 and Florida and Florida State. It's the first time since 1974 neither UF nor FSU was ranked in the preseason poll. Miami is ranked though.

I think the reason I didn't mention the schools you take note of is because with the possible exception of Oregon between 2010-2014, none of them made it elite-level big, IMO.
FWIW, I think VT's peak was probably 2004 - 2011. They had 8 straight 10+ win seasons during that time, and went to 5 BCS bowl, albeit going 1-4 in those.
I mean, Florida, Miami and FSU have won 11 national titles in the past 40 years. None of those schools you mention have won any, I think, so categorically different, IMO.

Its always fluctuated. If message boards existed in the 1950s fans of the Ivy League Schools, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Georgia Tech, Army and Navy would be boasting about how they have always dominated the sport, this is the way it always will be and that upstarts Ohio State, Michigan State, LSU, USC and UCLA need to know their role and STFU.

Is it just me, or are the top preseason G5s generally lower each year? It feels like clever marketing to weigh us down a bit more every season. Cincinnati in 2021 is the only recent exception I can think of.

IMO, top Gs generally should be rated low. The G-schools have an advantage, in that they will play a largely-G schedule.
I mean, I like Louisiana-Lafayette, wish they had been invited to the AAC over all of the six teams that we did invite save for Rice. Feel the same about App State too. But if that 13-1 ULL team that finished #17 in the final polls last year had played in the SEC, would they have finished ranked? Not a chance, they'd have been a 6-6 or 5-7 team at best, IMO.
IMO, good G-teams already have a poll advantage because they can roll up gaudy 13-1 type records playing Gs or maybe a bad P or two. They don't face the week in week out meatgrinder of the P schedule.

As far the preseason ranking for the 2022 year, we are the "tallest midget." AAC has really taken a hit from the XII expanding which only hurts the perception of the non-P5.
