What exactly have they proven? That they're good at throwing away money? For all the noise they've made recently what have they actually accomplished?

go back to the early '80s.

Maybe their next collective can pay people to attend their home games

SMU outbid A&M and UT in the 70's and 80's. There is no reason to think they won't still do it.

Beat Houston two of the past three years with the one loss coming as a result of a lame duck coach's stupid kick off decision. The little sleeping giant has risen from the grave.

They literally just started letting them pay players again. Pony Express of old was pretty good at this football stuff.

Those youngsters getting $36K/year had better hit the books so they can find work after leaving school. Few, if any, will sniff a pro career, some won't even graduate, and $36K/year might be the earning highlight of their entire lives. There are probably a lot of former college football players driving cabs in Podunk to make ends meet. Woulda, coulda, shoulda...

Don't forget, SMU boosters know what works and what doesn't in paying players.

There are moments when people walk in and just flat out put their Dick on the table.

Damn! SMU just set the entire G5 on notice and I believe is filling out their not si subtle application to the PAC.

That level of commitment is gonna get noticed and I don’t see SMU being in the AAC long.

SMU has always been rolling in the money without being in a power conference. Interesting to see them out recruiting p5's. Money talks so they definitely will be getting the players.

Not really considering it's all voluntary. You can't force private orgs to give money to women.

#1 Paying Top Athletes the Top Dollar, knowing there wont be enough for everyone
#2 Setting a Floor Price for everyone on the team, then attempting to go up for Top Athletes with whatever you have leftover

Personally, I think paying top dollar for the top athletes and assuming others will follow is the best approach. However as a G5, going to a bidding war against Texas or TAMU might not be a winning strategy.

It depends on the sport. The top dollar approach works in basketball. Football is more of a team sport so I think long run the floor price would work better

I would think this is a nice play for P5 inclusion. B12 or Pac-12.

Excellent academics.

The Pac-12 usually has issues with religious schools but I tend to think SMU has already addressed those concerns. They promote themselves as "nonsectarian". In 2019, they severed ties from Church control and won an appeal last year. I assume it may have been appealed again but it probably has not made its way to the Texas Supreme Court.

Maybe, an SMU fan could give us an update.
