RE: Proof Found - WHY & HOW Much Value Rutgers Added-B10 Network hits NYC Jackpot Article
The ACC selected 5 of the 8 original Big East football teams, but did not add Rutgers. Heck, WVU found a life raft out of the Big East (albeit not from the ACC) before Rutgers too. At the time Rutgers was invited to the Big 10, they were one of only two original Big East football members still in the conference. The other was Temple, which was being brought back after having originally been kicked out.

If Rutgers had such tremendous value, why did nobody except the Big Ten want them?

Probably a little something called Geography. That and the B1G Network as compared to the ACC network. I hear its trash.

We also believe this source of money is falling every year as folks drop cable. Cable was in decline when Rutgers was added. If the Big 10 is stuck with Rutgers forever, and the "extra" money (taken from NJ residents) lasts for 15 years, this is a terrible deal.

Rutgers is a cash cow being milked by the Big 10. They are terrible at sports and now Oh State, Michigan, Penn St, Michigan St fans are stuck seeing their teams play a MAC level game every year. If you have vision for more than 5 years, Rutgers is a terrible addition to the Big 10. Everybody knows why the Big 10 added Rutgers - we just think it was terrible.

the only major team sport that Rutgers is "terrible" at is the last decade of football due to losing Schiano to the NFL and refusing to spend money on a good replacement. And football the past couple of years have been recruiting rankings in the 30s and 40s. Last year Rutgers netted the #1 prospect from NY and KY alongside their usual strong recruiting in NJ, PA, FL. The program is in good shape again.

The rest of our sports are very competitive if not Top 25 programs.

Basketball - Top 25 level programs, NCAA tournament usually nowadays. Men's team finished seeded #4 in the conference tournament in arguably the 1st or 2nd toughest conference last year, and has qualified now for 3 straight tournaments. Women's has been a long-time Top 25 program and the Basketball HOF coach just retired.

Baseball - Top 25 level program, just missed the tournament this year after losing in the B1G tournament final.

Wrestling - Top 10 level program, with two individual National champions a couple of years ago, and the team lost in the finals.

Lacrosse - Top 10 level program mens, Top 25 level program womens. Men finished 2nd in the B1G (ranked #4 in the country before the tournament) to a legendary Maryland squad and as the #6 overall seed lost in the semi-final of the NCAA tournament. The Men's team has been ranked annually the past couple of years and made the tournament both years. Women made the NCAA tournament.

Rutgers missed the NCAA men's basketball tournament every year between 1992 and 2019. They weren't just terrible in football.

Yes, because just like with football, difficult to be successful when you have no money to spend. Once the money came in, the program turned around quickly. Also during the Big East years, despite the lack of money the teams were very competitive in the conference and came close to a bid almost every year, usually ending up in the NIT. In most other conferences, that's a program that is competing for the conference title annually since the Big East was so dominant. Its not like they were straight dead in the water like the football team before and after Schiano part 1. Usually the basketball program was winning 12-18 games a season in a stacked Big East. The football team was horrible after the Doug Graber era.

Good reminder. Quite a streak of futility.

I dislike Rutgers in the B1G. It’s not that I despise Rutgers or think they aren’t competitive enough. It’s just a bad fit. I would prefer them in the ACC with other Northeast schools.

I actually agree with you on this. I Love that RU is in the BIG, because it means inclusion with academic peers and athletic stability, safety and money. But frankly, I was surprised the ACC did not invite us and UConn to go to 16 and completely lock up the east cost. A 16 school ACC with UConn, RU and UMd in and Ville and ND out, would mean all but the Fla schools would be drivable weekend roadtrips for us. It would also keep us with our old BE rivals and provide ACC access to the NYC and Philly areas for recruiting.

there are only two former BE rivals that I really miss playing annually, and one of them isn't even in the ACC - West Virginia and Louisville, and maybe a sprinkle of Cincinnati. The ones in the ACC we never really had much rivalry with - they were usually bad when we were really good, and really good when we were terrible. The more nearby former conference mates UConn even in their good years was very meh, and alongside Syracuse and Temple have all completely gone down the drain in football. BC is nothing special either. There are no worthwhile nearby programs in the Northeast to strive to play against outside of the Big Ten. I don't really miss those teams other than the fact that we could road trip with a reasonable drive distance, so I'm more than happy to be in the Big Ten where at least we can strive to upset beat the big name programs like what we did to Michigan our first year in the conference.

Would have loved to have whipped on Miami back in the mid 2000s when the tables had finally been flipped with our respective programs after the way they always destroyed us throughout the years in the BE but we never played each other.
