22-23 MBB Schedule
Game at Texas on Dec 12. Rice wasn’t on the Houston schedule.

And then the previously mentioned MTE.

RICE, HOUSTON BAPTIST MTE
Nov. 18-20
Rice, Houston Baptist, Georgia Southern, Western Michigan

RE: 22-23 MBB Schedule
I'm a little surprised there won't be a Houston game. The only thing I'll speculate on it is they wanted to host the game again and we had been alternating the sites (UH and Rice) the past few years, and perhaps that was the stumbling block?

I'm trying to find the site, but there is a good source for non-conference schedules and now I can't find that site. But the only other game that person had in addition to the ones you mentioned was Texas State is hosting Rice (which makes sense because we hosted them last year).

We'll have less NC games total this year with a 20 game conference schedule. That will be the case for both the men and women.

This is the place to go for MBB schedules: https://d1docket.blogspot.com/

As of now we're at Pepperdine on November 7 in addition to the games above. And home against Northwestern State on December 17 (ugh).

What is the date of the game in San Marcos?

I think you are likely correct on the UH series. The Chronicle had a story when the schedule was released with Sampson complaining no good teams want to play UH. But his schedule is packed with home games and their own MTE that includes TSU. UH could have offered a game at the Fertitta Center which we turned down but TSU accepted.

Looks like we have Prairie View A&M at home on November 30. Finished 281 in KP last year, projected to be 285 this year by Torvik. Probably won't be a cupcake, unless we're miraculously better than most expect. Not a super compelling game from a fan's perspective, but I'll reserve judgment until we have the full schedule.

RE: 22-23 MBB Schedule
Quite arguably the most embarrassing MBB schedule in 5-10 years and that's saying something. Home games against 3 non-D1 teams, Northwestern State (consistently one of the worst teams in CBB), Prairie View, and then the MTE teams (what fan is going to find Georgia Southern and Western Michigan interesting?). Like, holy s***, this has to be one of the worst schedules in all of D1 basketball. One, maybe two legitimately compelling games in total. Not sure why any non-diehard Rice supporter would want to go to any of the home games. And if you're going to schedule home games which are going to draw no fans, might as well just try to play on the road at high-majors. I'd rather an away game at a Big 10 school than a home game against basically all of our schedule opponents.

November 7 at Pepperdine
November 10 home St. Thomas (TX) (non-d1)
November 18, 19, 21 Owl Invitational (Georgia Southern, Western Michigan, HBU)
November 30 home Prairie View
December 4 at Texas State
December 12 at Texas
December 15 home North American (non-D1)
December 17 home Northwestern St
December 19 home Jarvis Christian (non-D1)

RE: 22-23 MBB Schedule
I'm not really sure it's much different than the last two.

20-21 -- at Incarnate Word, Our Lady of the Lake, LeTourneau, at HBU, at UH (PPD), New Mexico (which was a late add due to Covid IIRC), HBU, at SHSU, UNO, Incarnate Word (PPD), Our Lady of the Lake a 2nd time
21-22 -- Pepperdine, at Houston, Southern, at UNO, the Gulf Coast tournament, Texas State, Jarvis Christian, at HBU, Incarnate Word, St. Thomas (PPD), at Texas (PPD), Jarvis Christian a 2nd time

The big difference between this year and the last two is we now have 20 conference games (up from 18), and with Marshall, USM and ODU gone, we will play every conference team twice. There will be three RPI drags within conference (UTSA, FIU and then Rice unless we're a lot better than people realize), but the other 7 conference teams will be solid in RPI. So that's 14 good conference RPI games compared to maybe 8-10 in the past?

If you want to say it's an embarrassing non-conference schedule, go ahead, I won't argue. But it's hard to say it's the worst overall schedule in 5-10 years when the conference is shaping up to be decent. Western Kentucky had some big transfer gets/keeps the past month. And UAB could be the best CUSA team in a decade?

The one thing I don't understand is we used to make an effort years ago to play a home game for a senior from out of state his final year. We have played plenty of Florida games so I get not doing that for Fiedler this year, but why not a game in Atlanta for Quincy or Massachusetts for Travis?

What's the point of an exhibition vs Rockhurst? Are they a good measuring stick to see if we can beat North American?? Like I rather not risk an injury and not have an exhibition.

Sometimes you have to get all the wins you can, any way you can.

As the Bob Polk era was winding mercifully down, I think his last year, Rice started 5-0 by playing 5 schools that wouldn't have contended in a Houston junior high league.

In the 1976-77 season (Polk's last), Rice started out 3-0 with home wins over Tulane, Southern Miss and Northern Colorado, before going on the road to lose to UCLA and Cal State-Fullerton.
