There’s all this crying about how the recruiters want to stay some extra days to get some additional recruiting in. It’s not that hard to book a few flights for some of the coaching staff from Chicago O’Hare to LAX in early December. Surely, ND has enough money to fly the team to the West Coast to play USC in September and then get a few coaches a 2nd flight on a commercial flight 3 months later.

All of college football does not revolve around ND. If you want to play the P2, you do so on their terms. There’s been an open invitation for you to join the Big 10 since at least Dec 1989 and we have a bunch of your traditional opponents. You can still play a national schedule and be in the Big 10, and get paid handsomely for doing so.

You are not a decision maker.

You are not the AD of Southern Cal.

The only crying seems to come from you, not ND fans.

What if ND doesn't care that you have ND's traditional opponents and still wants to be independent ??

What if ND wants to stay independent and Southern Cal and NBC (or ESPN) helps them to do so?

What are you going to do then?

Why do you care so much?

Why in the world do you want ND in the Big Ten so bad?

If ND wants to remain a football independent, I fail to see what business it is of yours.

ND has a way of doing things and so does the Big 10. We put our conference first and that means no forcing someone to play OOC during rivalry week against their will, which the ND-USC game certainly would.

The PAC 12 was ok with that arrangement but the Big 10 won’t be. There’s a reason why Mich/Mich St/Purdue vs ND games were historically played in September —October and especially November are for conference games. USC called the shots out west so they could get away with the ND arrangement but it’s not going to fly in the Big 10. That arrangement was far more beneficial to ND than it ever was to USC. USC doesn’t need that game to happen that week to recruit in their own backyard. Let’s face it, USC has Penn St, Michigan, and Ohio St for big time, cross regional showcase games—the ND rivalry isn’t even critical to preserve (like Texas vs Texas A&M for the last decade).

It time for ND to catch up with the times—join the Big 10 and enjoy a national schedule and our mounds of cash or good luck with your ho hum ACC/PAC 10/Big 12 opponents. It’s pretty obvious that ND and the Big 10 are natural partners; everyone but the Irish can see it.

If the current contract goes through 2026, they will probably honor that though with UCLA sitting out in 2024 and 2026 if nothing else can be arranged.

Well the issue I see isn't the fact that Notre Dame wants to play USC the last week of the season, they want to play USC the last week of the season every other week. If you're a Big Ten schedule maker, you then would need to come up with different Rivalry Week schedules to accommodate USC (and if they join the Big Ten, for Notre Dame) and that affects other conference schools. With a billion dollar TV contract, they can pay someone in the conference office to come up with 2 different schedules for odd and even years and coordinate with the other conferences.

The Big Ten could, but why would the want to do a team that has rebuffed there invitation to join for the 30+ years any favors.

Fair point. I do expect it will be done as a concierge service for USC.

(I also think ND us more valuable to everyone as an independent. As an Indy, they're special. Join big Ten, they're Wisconsin or Penn State or Nebraska.

I disagree. ND in the Big 10 is every bit an Ohio St, Michigan, or Penn St. I don’t think they lose any of their luster.

(We also need to put to rest that Big 10 membership killed the Nebraska program—it was already headed down hill when they were added)

Do answer several of your questions in no particular order:
1) At present, no Big Ten team plays an OOC opponent the last week of the season so somebody, (probably Rutgers or Maryland) is going to get screwed every other year.

2) ND benefits from play the last game of the year in California for recruiting reasons. I am sure USC benefits from playing ND, but the benefit isn't any better in November or September.

3) USC is going to get an additional $60M to $85M a year by moving to the Big Ten. As much as USC brings to the table they don't account for even half of that increase by themselves. If the Big Ten office tells them the last game of the season is reserved for conference games I am sure they will abide by that.

4) ND in the Big Ten would easily add another $20M+ to the per team payout. That is reason enough to want them to say nothing for the value of keeping them away from the SEC or ACC.

5) ND has been politely or maybe not so politely telling the Big Ten to get bent for the last 30+ years at least. I can't imagine my the Big Ten would want to do them any favors.

Oh well, then don't.

You guys tell Southern Cal what to do.

That seems another good reason for ND not to join.

ND can play Cal and Stanford at the end of each season instead.

Scrap the USC/ND game or play it in October. So it goes.

Nebraska was fine the first few years in the Big 10. Theyve been going downhill since Pelini was canned.

The B1G will get paid to broadcast that game from USC or UCLA on Black Friday afternoon. Fox/NBC/CBS will insist that the game be kept.

Ha. Notre Dame at USC will be part of the Big Ten contract every other year. You don't think FOX, NBC, and CBS would want that game over Thanksgiving weekend? Much better ratings than UCLA v. USC. Meanwhile, they will plug in UCLA v. Cal on FS1 at 10pm every other year.

This isn't hard, guys. Do something like this:

EVEN YEARS
2nd Week in OCT: UCLA @ USC; Stanford @ Notre Dame
Rivalry Weekend: Notre Dame @ USC; ??? @ UCLA

ODD YEARS
2nd Week in OCT: USC @ Notre Dame; ??? @ UCLA
Rivalry Weekend: Notre Dame @ Stanford; UCLA @ USC

It doesn't really matter who plays at UCLA as long as the home/away schedule works.

Well it does sort of matter who play at UCLA. Unless another Big Ten team plays on OOC game or has a bye that last week. UCLA will need to find an OOC team or take a bye that week. It certainly COULD be done, but the Big Ten as a conference and the individual teams are not obligated to make other arrangements to accommodate ND's desire to end their season in California.

But USC (or Notre Dame) doesn't want that, Notre Dame wants to play in California to end the season every year and when they play in South Bend play earlier. If you're a Big Ten schedule maker, you then would need to come up with different Rivalry Week schedules to accommodate USC (and if they join the Big Ten, for Notre Dame) and that affects other conference schools. Other Pac 12 schools in the past have accommodated Notre Dame. USC and Stanford have also accommodated Notre Dame as well, why wouldn't USC and UCLA want to play on Rivalry Week every year? Maybe USC should stand up to Notre Dame and say play in November every year or October every year or September every year. The UCLA-USC rivalry is compromised because of Notre Dame as is California-Stanford. Imagine if the Iron Bowl was played a week early. Wouldn't be the same. The California schools deserve Rivalry week games as much as the rest of the country.

NBC can use its ND home game against Georgia Tech to promote its B1G home game ND @ USC, without even mentioning that ND is at Clemson next weekend on some other network.

The B1G can send a different eastern team out to California for a California vacation (4-day, 9-day, three free days in Las Vegas,

Nebraska was fine the first few years in the Big 10. Theyve been going downhill since Pelini was canned.

I'm sorry, there was a noise or something - Did you say "...since Osborne retired" ?

If the game happens in the middle of the season it doesn't cause any issues for anyone. If the game happens at the end of the season that means that another Big Ten team won't have a Big Ten opponent to play the last week of the season.

RE: Future of ND’s season ending games in CA
A big OOC game is much more valuable to the Big 10 in weeks 1-4 than it is in week 13, when there’s a glut of great match ups that can draw tv eye balls.

There’s also a carrot here for ND—if you want to keep ending your season in CA, you can do that if you JOIN the Big 10 (alongside Stanford)—UCLA plays whoever isn’t playing the Irish.

Just a tidbit for anyone who things I just passionately hate ND—I just think they are a natural fit with the Big 10 and ND was a school a strongly considered for grad school.

USC already plays 9 conference games in addition to Notre Dame. I fail to see how joining another conference that has a 9 conference games makes playing Notre Dame some impossible task
