RE: Future of ND’s season ending games in CA
BYU was an independent during this period, so they really needed that final week opponent.

I imagine BYU-Utah will move back to Thanksgiving.
I imagine it would trickle down like…
USC-ND
UCLA-Cal
Furd-CU
Utah-BYU
UCF-USF

Iowa could move their game against Iowa State to rivalry week if they really wanted to accommodate USC. It seems like the Iowa/Nebraska end-of-season game has been sort of forced into that spot.

Neither Iowa and Nebraska were excited at first but both have recently gone on the record that they both now like the Black Friday match-up and want it to continue. Of course that was before USC and UCLA joined.

RE: Future of ND’s season ending games in CA
Something to think about here is that 9 of 10 FBS leagues have an even number of teams, so if a P2/M3 league team is playing ND, the only options out there are:

Army
UMass
UConn
a C-USA team (by virtue of having an odd #, someone is left out). It may not seem like a big deal, but forcing a conference mate to play 12 weeks straight with no bye is pretty crappy.

Back when the Big 10 had 11 schools you had a few more options:

ACC had an odd # from 1992-2004
The SWC was odd until it disbanded after the 1995 season
C-USA had a few odd # seasons prior to 2005
The WAC was odd for 1990-1991, 2000, 2005-2010, & 2012
The Big West played some odd seasons before they disbanded after the 2000 season
The SBC was odd for 2001-2002, 2004, 2008-2011

Case in point, it used to be easier to have an odd number but CCGs have made that a tough go.

That is what I think the issue is with getting the PAC-12 to agree to UCLA/Cal that week. It would leave someone else out in the PAC and since they are not getting a Notre Dame for their contract that week, will be much less inclined to help out.

I think it can be worked out though the more I think about it. Once a decade is something I think they can get some teams on board for accepting (try to make up to them with some other small scheduling requests).

RE: Future of ND’s season ending games in CA
It appears that most recently the rivalry game has been UC-B v. UCLA.

USC and Stanford would play ND or BYU.

Cal-Stanford has never consistently been at the end of the season, though it might become so for the Pac-10.

So how about USC and UCLA host ND in alternate years. The other LA school would host another B1G school in years they are not hosting ND. This gives the B1G late afternoon games on Thanksgiving Friday and Saturday.

The B1G opponent would rotate through the other 14 B1G schools, so that their fans could get a Thanksgiving vacation in California (4 day or 9 day packages available).

The other rivalry games would be moved earlier in the seasons. So for example:

Year 1: ND @ USC, Minnesota @ UCLA. Minnesota-Wisconsin moved earlier in season; Iowa-Wisconsin and Nebraska-Oklahoma/Missouri played on rivalry week.

Year 8: ND @ UCLA, Wisconsin @ USC. Minnesota-Wisconsin moved earlier in season; Iowa-Minnesota and Nebraska-Oklahoma/Missouri played on rivalry week.

Year 2: ND @ UCLA, MSU @ USC. MSU-Penn State moved earlier in season; PSU-West Virginia/Pitt/Syracuse played on rivalry week.

Year 9: ND @ USC, PSU @ UCLA. MSU-Penn State moved earlier in season; MSU-Maryland and Rutgers-UConn played on rivalry week.

Year 3: ND @ USC, NW @ UCLA. NW-Illinois moved earlier in season. Illinois-Nebraska and Iowa-Iowa State played on rivalry week.

Year 10: ND @ UCLA, Illinois @ USC. NW-Illinois moved earlier in season. NW-Vanderbilt played on rivalry week.

Year 4: ND @ UCLA, Maryland @ USC. Maryland-Rutgers moved earlier in season. Rutgers-Syracuse played on rivalry week.

Year 11: ND @ USC, Rutgers @ USC. Maryland-Rutgers moved earlier in season. Maryland-Pitt played on rivalry week.

Year 5 ND @ USC, Purdue @ UCLA. Purdue-Indiana moved earlier in season. Indiana-Cincinnati played on rivalry week.

Year 12 ND @ UCLA, Indiana @ USC. Purdue-Indiana moved earlier in season. Purdue-Maryland and Rutgers-UMass played on rivalry week.

Year 6 ND @ UCLA, Nebraska @ USC. Iowa-Nebraska moved earlier in season. Iowa-Iowa State played on rivalry week.

Year 13 ND @ USC, Iowa @ UCLA. Iowa-Nebraska moved earlier in season. Nebraska-Oklahoma on rivalry week.

Year 7 ND @ USC, Michigan @ UCLA. Michigan-OSU moved earlier in season. MSU-Michigan and PSU-Pitt played on rivalry week.

Week 14 ND @ UCLA, Ohio State @ USC. Michigan-OSU moved earlier in season. OSU-PSU and MSU-West Virginia played on rivalry week.

Week 14 ND @ UCLA, Ohio State @ USC. Michigan-OSU moved earlier in season. OSU-PSU and MSU-West Virginia played on rivalry week.

I don't think you would get everyone agree to this (I know OSU wouldn't), but for teams who aren't as fixed on a particular season ending game, I think you could get to go along once a decade or so provided a) there is more money involved and b) give them extra input on rest of schedule for year.

If they don't go along, then it would have to move up a week, but if important to USC and good for TV, I think we find a compromise.

The schools might gripe but they won’t care. Joining the B1G was far more important than playing a game on a certain week.

RE: Future of ND’s season ending games in CA
I say no more pampering ND—you want to play USC and recruit players in CA, you do it in September when everyone else in this conference plays OOC games.

There’s all this crying about how the recruiters want to stay some extra days to get some additional recruiting in. It’s not that hard to book a few flights for some of the coaching staff from Chicago O’Hare to LAX in early December. Surely, ND has enough money to fly the team to the West Coast to play USC in September and then get a few coaches a 2nd flight on a commercial flight 3 months later.

All of college football does not revolve around ND. If you want to play the P2, you do so on their terms. There’s been an open invitation for you to join the Big 10 since at least Dec 1989 and we have a bunch of your traditional opponents. You can still play a national schedule and be in the Big 10, and get paid handsomely for doing so.

It is good for the B1G. B1G goes to Hollywood.

The B1G would have the TV rights to both games, including a late afternoon game on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It is something that could be promoted to fans as a 1 in 14 year spectacle only available to B1G fans. It would be a mini-vacation. Fly the band out. Schedule the Browns and Bengals at Sofi on Saturday and Sunday. Fans who had no chance of going to a game at Buckeye Stadium could go (and it is a lot more fun than driving to Rutgers on a Saturday).

Well the issue I see isn't the fact that Notre Dame wants to play USC the last week of the season, they want to play USC the last week of the season every other week. If USC wanted to play Notre Dame every Rivalry Week every year, it would be easy to have Iowa play Iowa State and then have Nebraska and UCLA play. But USC (or Notre Dame) doesn't want that, Notre Dame wants to play in California to end the season every year and when they play in South Bend play earlier. If you're a Big Ten schedule maker, you then would need to come up with different Rivalry Week schedules to accommodate USC (and if they join the Big Ten, for Notre Dame) and that affects other conference schools. Other Pac 12 schools in the past have accommodated Notre Dame. USC and Stanford have also accommodated Notre Dame as well, why wouldn't USC and UCLA want to play on Rivalry Week every year? Maybe USC should stand up to Notre Dame and say play in November every year or October every year or September every year. The UCLA-USC rivalry is compromised because of Notre Dame as is California-Stanford. Imagine if the Iron Bowl was played a week early. Wouldn't be the same. The California schools deserve Rivalry week games as much as the rest of the country.

You are not a decision maker.

You are not the AD of Southern Cal.

The only crying seems to come from you, not ND fans.

What if ND doesn't care that you have ND's traditional opponents and still wants to be independent ??

What if ND wants to stay independent and Southern Cal and NBC (or ESPN) helps them to do so?

What are you going to do then?

Why do you care so much?

Why in the world do you want ND in the Big Ten so bad?

If ND wants to remain a football independent, I fail to see what business it is of yours.

Southern Cal never wanted to play in South Bend in November.

They didn't want to play in cold or snow.

It was their choice to play in October when playing at ND.

That is when Stanford was added to the schedule to allow a final California game every year.

With a billion dollar TV contract, they can pay someone in the conference office to come up with 2 different schedules for odd and even years and coordinate with the other conferences.

To answer several of your questions in no particular order:
1) At present, no Big Ten team plays an OOC opponent the last week of the season so somebody, (probably Rutgers or Maryland) is going to get screwed every other year.

2) ND benefits from play the last game of the year in California for recruiting reasons. I am sure USC benefits from playing ND, but the benefit isn't any better in November or September.

3) USC is going to get an additional $60M to $85M a year by moving to the Big Ten. As much as USC brings to the table they don't account for even half of that increase by themselves. If the Big Ten office tells them the last game of the season is reserved for conference games I am sure they will abide by that.

4) ND in the Big Ten would easily add another $20M+ to the per team payout. That is reason enough to want them to say nothing for the value of keeping them away from the SEC or ACC.

5) ND has been politely or maybe not so politely telling the Big Ten to get bent for the last 30+ years at least. I can't imagine my the Big Ten would want to do them any favors.

If the current contract goes through 2026, they will probably honor that though with UCLA sitting out in 2024 and 2026 if nothing else can be arranged.

With a billion dollar TV contract, they can pay someone in the conference office to come up with 2 different schedules for odd and even years and coordinate with the other conferences.

The Big Ten could, but why would the want to do a team that has rebuffed there invitation to join for the 30+ years any favors.

Fair point. I do expect it will be done as a concierge service for USC.

(I also think ND us more valuable to everyone as an independent. As an Indy, they're special. Join big Ten, they're Wisconsin or Penn State or Nebraska.
