I wonder if we might see the bowls be replaced with little 4-team NIT-Esque tournaments.

If we see a clean break between the P2 and everyone else or the P2/M3 and everyone else would we see a 8/12/16 team NCAA tournament emerge?

I personally would like to see the Rose, Sugar, Orange, and either the Fiesta or Cotton Bowls as permanent quarterfinal sites but then what would become of the Peach, Holiday, Citrus, Texas, Outback, Gator, etc?

First thing they need to do is drastically reduce the number of bowls. There are way too many. There are supposed to be 44 bowl games this year alone. That’s way too much. They’ve added 21 bowls since 2001. And on Wiki there are nine more future games proposed. Making it to a bowl game used to mean a lot more. Now if you’re 6-6, you’re bowl eligible. And some 5-7 teams make it also. The more they add, the more interest wanes. Couple that with the playoff, and anything outside the playoff is less meaningful.

They could also take sponsors off of bowl names, especially the dot coms. There is a reason the Super Bowl is not called the Galleryfurniture.com Super Bowl. Because it cheapens it. Get the sponsors off the bowl game names.

They need to find creative ways to add meaning to the bowl games, but that’s next to impossible with the amount of games.

Do you not like to watch football on tv?

You might have the Hallmark Channel if that's more of your thing.

I've always been interested in the idea of a secondary tournament (like NIT), or multiple secondary tournaments. My only issue would be if they started trying to set them up by conference rather than by performance.

For instance, none of that P2/M4/G4 nonsense. If the #13 and #14 ranked teams are Oklahoma State and Memphis, they should both be in the secondary tournament.

Agreed, I would set it up like this. That way all conference champs and top 24-26 teams participate.

A-Tier: Top 6 Conference Champs + Top 6 At-Large
12 Team CFP

B-Tier: Bottom 4 Conference Champs + Top 12 At-Large
16 Team NIT or 2 8-Team NITs

C-Tier: All remaining Bowl Eligible Teams
7 Wins needed to become bowl eligible
Likely 20 Bowl Games in addition to 14 or 15 NIT games and 11 CFP games

I don't think it's an ask to have less games (at least from the poster you replied to), it's for those games to be meaningful to the participants.

Same as people complaining about all the movies coming out being bad. They don't want there to be less movies. They just want better ones.

I like bowls whose original names are still more memorable than their sponsors: Rose, Cotton, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Citrus, Holiday, Gator, Peach. Any bowl named after a restaurant chain, whether a minor one such as Beef O'Brady's, or a larger paying one, such as Outback, can end as far as I'm concerned. Do we still have the Sun Bowl, the one played in El Paso that is, iirc, 2 years older than the Sugar, or has its name been superseded by some tech company or pet food name?

the fact that you don't know
says that "the Sun Bowl" doesn't matter anymore. it's just a game on TV in a remote city.

The part in red says there should be fewer bowl games.

If there are fewer bowl games, it's not like they're likely to replace that programming with something better. "Bad" college football is still better than fake debates or televised poker or whatever we'd probably get otherwise.

That’s your opinion. I usually don’t even watch any of those bowl games until Christmas Eve. They’re just not compelling enough for my taste. I would rather see the NCAA shift the FCS playoffs later and fill that air time with more of those games. They’re more compelling games.

In theory, smart people with lots of data are doing the cost/benefit analysis on all that stuff right?

And they keep on showing more and more bowl games.
