So do we. UTSA was established in '69.

The UH Football booster club is called the 46ers because our football team started in 1946. Please tell me your booster club is the 69ers. I need a shirt.

Yes, please tell me your booster club is the 69ers. I need that shirt as well, it's been my jersey number for every sport that I have ever played.

Hah, no, nothing like that yet, unfortunately. If we did get something like that going, someone would probably complain about it, and we'd likely then put it to rest anyway. We've already had to do away with one unique tradition we had started.

Being new to football, and looking for unique traditions to call our own - since most everything else has already been done/claimed - we started a "Come And Take It" tradition, which ties back to the Battle of Gonzalez during the Texas Revolution in 1835. We even asked the Mayor of Gonzalez for permission to use the motto/flag at our football games, and got his blessing as well. A small minority of people in San Antonio took issue with the flag though, saying it's anti-Mexican and anti-immigrant, so we got rid of it. A former UTSA professor actually started the petition btw.

Thing is, we had the flag at our football games from year one of our program (2011), and later created a giant version of the flag that would be unfurled between the 3rd and 4th quarter in the student section. No one ever said anything. It wasn't until we built our new R.A.C.E. (Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence) facility, and it had a lit version of the phrase in the entryway, that anything was even said, though we had already used the tradition for a decade by that time.

I must be missing something, I like it, I can't see anything that would be controversial, but then again I'm not of Mexican decent.

I bet that the professor that started the petition wasn't of Mexican decent either.

PS... I'm a big fan of UTSA, and have been from the minute they joined the WAC.

I wouldn't feel comfortable if my daughter came home from college with a shirt that said, "Come and Take It."

For reasons completely unrelated to Anti-Mexican sentiment.

I'm torn. This season is a write-off considering the realignment coming, so I'd actually rather have 2-3 of the new programs come in playing well.

Not sure why it would be embarrassing. UTSA spent time in the top 25. Only way if it is embarrassing is if UH gets curb stomped by 20+. A closely fought game with UTSA would be a positive for the AAC.

History is distorted too much to meet modern sensitivities. At the time, the US and Mexico were at war... and that was a battle cry for Texas. (Anyone can Google if they want the details...) Using it as a sports metaphor (implying toughness, etc.) means literally nothing towards your feelings about Mexico or immigration. It's like pulling some battle phrase from the American revolution and someone claiming you don't like the British. Nonsense.

That said, there is a lot of nonsense floating around our country these days... and administrations have to play the game...

Go UTSA!

This is just a false statement. The RB loss is a big loss, however UTSA returns a long time senior starting QB and their top 3 wideouts, all of who are good. UTSA is picked to win CUSA by a lot.

Houston will probably win, but to say you don't think it stays close for long?

Agreed.

The game will be played in San Antonio, and that could boost the roadrunners' chances.

It would be embarrassing because Houston is THE favorite to win the AAC. You may have missed that proclamation. Even a "close loss" would be embarrassing to the prohibitive AAC conference favorites...

If that's how you want to view it......LOL A loss would look great for the future of the AAC. If anyone chooses to be embarrassed, that's on them.

And UTSA is the overwhelming favorite to win CUSA, your point is. They spent multiple weeks in the top 25, topping out around 14 or 15 last year. Both will have good teams this year. Houston will probably be slightly favored by my guess 4-7 points and will probably win, but it wouldn't shock anyone if UTSA won. Just because a team is from CUSA doesn't mean they can't be good. The WKU QB threw like 60 touchdowns last year. Their league may suck, but individual teams are good and have talent.

Bingo. The top of the league was pretty darn good and can compete in the AAC without question. I am happy our program will be here next season and we plan to compete for championships day one. That's not a slight against anyone. It's our attitude. I suspect Houston will win the game and that's where the smart money will go but if UTSA plays a clean game with a monster crowd at home, I can see the Roadrunners pulling off the win and the AAC should be happy they are getting a program that can compete with the departing Coogs. It's not impossible for them to "Coog It" I've seen it in person.

More embarrassing than when UTSA beat Houston 27-7 in the inaugural game at TDECUTSA stadium?

First East Carolina fans tease us on the "ECU" part of TDECU "which is a bank in Texas'' and now this at the end "UTSA". I guess that we will be ready. We have to, after taking the East Carolina apart last year in a close game. Guess what time it is, it is UTSA time! I hope Dana Holgerson embarrass them! Go Coogs!

Our fanbase does bring it up too often. But it was a pretty cool thing. I mean, not many schools can say they’ve been there to open someone else’s stadium. Even fewer can say they actually won the game as the visiting team. And it was darn near a shutout at that because you guys finally scored your touchdown with a minute left in the game, against a prevent defense of mostly reserve players.

Like I said though, your defense worries me, and that might be the difference this time.

More embarrassing than when UTSA beat Houston 27-7 in the inaugural game at TDECUTSA stadium?

LOL that game was UTSA's championship. They still talk about it

LOL the inaugural game is more relevant to UH and even then it's still a meaningless game in the grand scheme of things. It's embarrassing to lose to yall regardless of when we play. That's just how perception currently is and why yall still talk about it with such importance. In fact it probably got Tony Levine fired even though he went 8-5 that season. If we won it was because we were supposed to and it would have been just another game.

You're right. In the grand scheme, it was fairly meaningless. But when you put it in that context, our next game will be as well. I would also argue though, that within that same grand scheme, the 2014 game to christen your stadium will still be more meaningful than either of our other two regular season games will have been.
